Addiction to fast food is the cause of obesity in our country?

It is quite alarming to see the increased in fast foods outlets in my country. To name a few, KFC, macdonald and pizza hut are getting good support from the locals. Fast food is convenient, fast food is unhealthy and, apparently, fast food advertisements are the cause of why there are so many overweight and obese Malaysians. That is what our Health Minister wants us to believe. But what we don't hear is the fact that most fast food outlets are getting healthier. A recent visit to KFC showed they now have fish in their menu and rice in macdonald. In my opinion, it is ridiculous to blame on these fast foods when our own lifestyle foods is no less a sinner.
What do you conclude about fast food, is it as bad as most think?

Fastfoods are design to offer food services for those who need it. Pointing a finger or blaming these kinds of establishments is not helping at all when saying that it cause them obesity or that sort of thing. Choosing your food even in fast food chains can also be observed but managing your time with the choices of healthier food can be done. There are fast food who offers healthy veggie salad or something healthy. Grabbing a fatty and sweet food is not helping instead its indeed risking your life for heart problems and the like, then again it is the choice of individual which food should he eat.

i don't knwo in reality if all cases and abou obesity should be a consequence of fast food success and people addiction towards this kind of food!!Surely this food is not really healthy and so if there are people that like to eat there daily it wouldn't be so good!!Personally i never coem to fast food...the last time i was in a macdonald in reality i did not remember..

I see good argument here. The fastfoods joints do not overload their foods with high calorie which might pose danger to one's health. I am sure they have a panel of dieticians and nutritionists who formulated their recipes before going public. It is the obsessed consumers who have no control over their addiction and eating fried chickens for example on a daily basis is only creating a health havoc that leads to obesity.

I agree with some of your point, we can not put all blame to the fast food for causing all troubles. That's right the food got enough nutrition for people to eat, but that food also had fat, saturated fat ... So the point is we just need balance of nutrition, we need more understanding to our own body. If yesterday we eat lots of saturated fat, today we need to neutralized it with & doing excercise. If the balance broken our body surely got out of control

But how can we say this food is not good, the calories of each food is I think mentioned on all the food items in a very explained manner then after that if we are using them, it is not the fault of fast food or their provider. For example if there is some kind of hurdle like a hole in your way and you know that, you ll try to avoid that hole instead of falling yourself in it. Same is the case with fast food, you know the bad and good of fast food, you know your calories requirement, then how come you follow the same way...

Yes Zandi, occasional cunsumption of fast food has no bad impact on health, rather it is health as well as taste supporting. But taking fast food frequently is the cause of obesity and overweight, which give rise to many physiological problems to a person! Since fast foods are rich in fat in the form of boiled oil and many oily substances, they contain more colestrol, which is essentially avoidable for health! Hope, you may have good control over this!!

I do not believe that obesity can be completely linked to fast food as many people eat the same things at home as they do when they eat out. I believe that people not being as active and eating more than people used to is why the world is seeing an increase in obesity.

Yes, we can't totally blame our obese society on these fastfoods. We are to blame ourselves for leading a sedentary life. I am sure not everyone goes to fastfood outlets for their foods as the foods there are not cheap but still many remain obese.

It's not the fastfood's liability why people are getting obese these days.
It's the lifestyle.
See how most people loves to sit the whole day watching their favorites tv series or entertainment.
Most people don't like walking instead taking a cab or a family having each own car.
People are getting lazy nowadays, blame that foe getting obese.
We can eat whatever we want as long we also doing some exercise regularly.
I've observe this to myself.
I've gained weight after the summer vacation, when we have nothing to do but eat, have fun going out from one place to another.
And i never paid attention to my weight, until one day i was having problem with my clothes, can't find any that fits me,everything is bulging.
And,just recently i started simple exercise, walking in particular.
Within a month i lost weight, and my old clothes are starting to fit it again.
until now i am still doing the walking exercise, everyday for 20-30 minutes.
And i also feel more lighter and it also helps me to endure long walks.

I am guilty of not exercising. After coming back from a long overseas vacation I found my jeans are no longer wearable. There is 2 inches gap in my front zip and regretted for abusing my body in feeding it with high caloric foods from these fast foods outlets. Your words motivate me to start a strict exercise regime to get back to my original size. Thanks jaiho...once I reach my ideal weight I'll celebrate it here by another discussion to motivate others. I hate being fat but my long hours in front of the computer is also part of the reason how I put on these unwanted fats that keep protruding all over my body. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I strive to be serious in getting rid of those ugliness.

In my own opinion, I don't think you can blame it all to fastfoods. There are always advantages and disadvantages on different things. As for me, when I'm in a tight budget eating at mcdonalds is really an advantage. We have to be balance also and it's our choice on what we want to eat. It's really a matter of choice and decision on what kind of lifestyle we want to live.

In my view, it is the life style of a person to use fast food or any other, yes, in Malaysia and other parts of world, fast food industry is growing at steady state. This is only due to our life style, we want this kind of food and thats why they are here. I will not blame the fast food provider but to my self and my life style. I prefer to go there. If I dnot go then they ll not flourish.
As we all know what is good and what is bad for us, but still we are practicing those practices which are unhealthy.
On the other hand fast food is also providing good amount of calories, so why should not use the amount of calories needed...:)

I think you are living in kampung and there you ll observe all these simple practices, the thing I like in Malaysia is village life very simple very interesting, no worries no fats all time happy happy...:)

It is no longer easy to tempt the taste-bud to accept foods without added salt, sugar etc. I myself can't go without all those food enhancer. I like to cook and I am quite adventurous in creating new recipes and all the spices, salt and sugar is what make the food tastier.

I personally don't think fast food is as bad as the nutritionists want to make us believe. I think the problem with fast food is that people tend to eat more as an every day meal instead as a treat now and then and there is where the problem is.
A lot of people don't seem to realize a meal cooked at home with fresh ingredients is best, but there you are we are not all the same.

Hiya zandi,
Although it can cause weight problems. You can find problems with the ordinary Food and the way it´s cooked too.
We eat a lot of beans and lentils but my kids and Husband don´t like many greens with the bean stew say so sometimes what I do is I make a double amount of fresh vegetables and save one half for the next Day and use the other half for the Bean Stew.
If I do meat with potatoes I always use a great variety of greens and if there is any left over that is not touched by anyone I use it the next Day with a few fresh Greens and Lentils you can easily thicken the lentils by slowing down the flame and let them cook longer then I add the meat and greens and potatoes that were left over from yesterday say and mix them together at the end. This gives a lot more taste and no extra salt is really needed as the meat and greens and potatoes from yesterday have got more taste. I serve this with a Salad the best one I can make and as cheaply.
I love to eat a Pizza but only as a treat I never make these foods my everyday thing. I use a lot of Onion ordinary white Onion a little Celery and Leeks also.

Hi lovin, you sound to be a great cook. Lentils is seldom used in our cooking but I love to learn to cook lentils and include it in my daily meals. I suppose lentils has high nutritional values. Are you using the yellow lentils? We have it here but only served in Indian restaurant that comes with their famous indian pancakes.

Hiya zandi,
Lentils are either brown or yellowish. Some are pre soaked so that you don´t have to soak them overnight. They come in very handy for one of those lazy Days or when you forget to soak the Yellowish ones.
I like Curried Lentils but they are not a favourite in this House so I don´t do them simply that.
In Spain Lentils with what you might call Salami is a favourite but it´s way too greasy although the taste is fantastic I can tell you.
So a few times I get Salami here we call it Chorizo, Longaniza also and I cook it apart and then add it at the end to the Lentils and that way it´s not so bad for your Health. I also add a little Garlic too if I am doing meat just in case thing.
When I was in England last I had a hard time trying to find Red Lentils yet alone the Split Green Ones they could only be bought from up the Town.
It´s no wonder People take to fast food when they can´t find what they want. Not everyone has the time to go up Town because they Work too. So I understand how this fast food gets to be a habit.
But when I was working full time and was pregnant with Twins I always bought fresh Stuff on my way home or went out in my Lunch Time to buy it. That kept me very healthy too. It´s a question of organizing yourself I never had any Family to help me out I did it all myself the Shopping I mean.
What I mean to say is anyone can get to eat properly most times if they just spend a little more time getting out to the right places.
Here there is a big problem with Children eating too many fast Foods. My kids always wanted them too but I never gave in most of the time and they ate normal Food although every so often I would treat them to a Meal out.
Marguicha knows much much more than me about food like this. she has some great ideas too.

Hi zandi:
I really can't say that foods in fastfoods make one fat. For one, the amount of food one can eat there is directly proportional to the amount of money in one's wallet which is not much. Secondly, only a small minority of the population frequent these places. Most are in their homes eating homemade food, leftover food, recycled food or not eating at all.
Try looking on the sidewalks and count the number of fat people against thin people including the street children, beggars, and the homeless and you'll be surprised at the result.
Ooooops, sorry. In our place at least, I haven't been to Malaysia yet.

It all depends on individual taste. I believe these popular fast food outlets are getting more support from the younger generations and not so much from older people. But here in Malaysia the people seems to indulge so much on fast foods as it is more convenient for them because of their hectic life outside. Now these outlets have added delivery services to homes which make it even more convenient to buy fast foods. Comparatively, the Malaysians are not too obese yet as those in other western countries. But if they fail to curb their appetites for fast foods, we will no longer see slim people walking our streets.

fast food serve most of them are deep-fried foods that's why its unhealthy. we shouldnt blame fast food but the people who gets addicted to it because they're the one choosing to eat those foods everyday. they should just take it to moderation like once a week would be enough

Fast foods restaurants are here to serve their customers and has nothing to do with individuals health issue or know that the foods they serve will load up their customers veins with fats that might make them sick. The customers have to be smart eaters and need to know that eating foods fried in oil everyday is unhealthy. Pointing fingers at this established fast food outlets for obesity does not make sense at all.

I don't know about your country but I think this is a global issue. And I totally agree that fast-foods are not responsible for obesity. Don't get me wrong, I am not protecting them either but I think that is just an excuse for people to say they eat fast because they don't have time to cook and such, so that's why they are fat. The truth is 90% of the food in fast-foods, restaurants, markets up to our homes is bad for health and weight balance. The society as a whole, the evolution of science, the additives are the true cause of obesity. It only depends on what and how much you eat and on where you buy your food from. It's not where the food is grown and when and where it is cooked, but how it is cooked that matters. One can eat "slow" cooked food, or home made.. and still get fat. And one can eat only fast food and not get fat. A balanced life style depends on many factors and food is only one of them and the fast-food generated obesity is only a myth.

It really depends, as I said, on how much and what you eat. I've herd of cases that experimented fast food too and even got slimmer. For example a hamburger has about 250 calories/100g - about one hamburger. If you eat 6 hamburgers a day and nothing else so: 2 in the morning, 2 in the afternoon, and 2 3 hours before bedtime (usually it would be good to not eat anything in those 3 hours before bedtime) then you get 1500 calories a day which is good and I think it's enough to not be hungry. Problem is with vitamins. You don't get too many of those in hamburgers so you can get slimmer even, but might also lose energy. You can even eat 8-9-10 hamburgers if you exercise a lot. So to mark my point it's not what you eat, it's how much you eat, when you eat, how much you exercise to lose extra calories, and of course how many vitamins and nutrients are in what you eat.

It's never their (fastfood) reponsibility if people get sick and all. We are all too old to know and do what's best for us. For kids, it's their parents' responsibility to monitor the calorie intake etc. We as human beings are in full discretion to control whatever we would want to eat. But government institution can give more awareness regarding food and nutrition.

the best fast food place I like ot go to id subway as you can put on you own veggies.
I dont like to go to the other places vey oftern also try to get grand daughter to not want to go there either she will soon be 6 not over weight she burns it all off. playing out side and not staying inside o play on puter or other things she loves the outtdoors I think with the mix of fast food and not getting outside to play both factors in the weight gain

Most of our foods here are tainted with msg. Though it make foods more delicious but the after effect is we get thirsty soon after eating foods that have msg added. Small kids burn calories faster so they have no problem of eating fast foods like KFC fried chicken. We in the aged group should avoid high calorie foods.

Welcome to my world! It is not just fast food that makes people fat! We don't pay attention to how much we eat. We eat to much food that is allready prepared form the the grocery store. We don't get enough exercise. We are lazy! Wrap all this up and alot of this is me! Having depression and having a love affair with food doesn't help either! Food id love! It is an addiction! Take that away form me and I have nothing!

Fast food from these companies is horrific. It should be avoided at all costs in my opinion. These American companies care about one thing and one thing only. Profits! They do not care how many people get sick from eating their so called foods. They try to sound like to are creating healthy options but in reality, those healthy options are only marginally better than the rest of the garbage that they pass off as food.
Their foods are packed with nasty chemicals which can lead to cancer, diabetes and a number of other health issues. There are plenty of videos online of McDonalds burgers that people have kept for many years and they look just the same as the new ones when compared side by side with a recently bought one. This is totally unnatural as food is supposed to degrade and rot. If food does not turn into a mouldy mess after a certain amount of time, then it is not really food.
Fast Food is cheap and convenient, packed with addictive chemicals to keep you coming back for more. And they spray a perfume out into the air surrounding the restaurant which triggers these addictive emotions in you to draw you into their restaurants. DO NOT be tricked into eating the stuff, it is not food, but an edible product being passed off as food!

The owners of these American fast food chain of restaurants won't be please to read your reviews here. But what you say is nothing but the truth. I have seen the popularity of fast food outlets in your country. I joined the locals to patronize these joints quite often while I was there. Boy..when I came back home I can't even fit in to most of my jeans. The food tasted good and very filling but the side effects of eating in these fast foods outlets has a heavy penalty. It will take me months to shed those unwanted fats.

Sorry to hear about your weight gain while you were here Zandi. Hopefully you will lose it fast. We are becoming too much like America here unfortunately. You are right, they are everywhere now, these restaurants. Two more McDonalds are being built near me right now! When I grew up, there was only one McDonalds in the entire region that I lived in. No such thing as drive throughs either then!
I admit it is not only the fault of the companies, but it is also the fault of the people for becoming too lazy to cook. Even when I go to the supermarkets, which is rare as we buy our food mostly from organic farmers, I see people with hideous amounts of junk food in their trolleys. Society has become lazy, probably due to the lack of nutrients in these foods that they eat that give no energy. This causes more fast food eating as people become too tired to make their own healthy options and the problem worsens.
The situation needs to change in western countries. It is no coincidence that we have higher rates of obesity, diabetes and cancer in these countries that have more fast food outlets. Sadly, Asian countries are now starting to become more westernised, which is not good at all.

Hello zandi you are right
It is not only in your country, but here in india too, kids these days have little physical activity, they get up do home work given by teacher, go school by bus, in school they sit, come home by bus, watch tv etc, so no exercises of the limbs.. and about food they eat chocolates, fast food etc etc
So lack of physical activity and fast food leads to obesity..
Thank you so much for timely discussion.
Professor ‘Bhuwan’. .
God bless you.
Welcome always.

Hi Prof, it is from their parents who should initiate a good habit of exercising by going for jogs in the evening if they want to see their children healthy and not ending up obese. In those days students used to walk to school or cycle to school unlike now when everything is so convenient so the need to stretch the muscles a bit.

That is sad that these fast food restaurants are being seen as classy. Here they are cheap and nasty. It is classier to be seen in Asian or European restaurants. They are better than the American restaurants but not as healthy as controlling your own food options at home. Please try to educate these people that it is not wise or classy to go these places, but in fact they are a danger to their health.
