For convenience, would you simply put your PC on "sleep" mode?

I just wondering, do you turn off your computer when you finish doing your work or browsing the net? Or do you want it to be convenient, and simply put it in "sleeping" mode? It is my habit to turn off my computer whenever I finish with it. Because I don't want to waste any electricity while it is dormant. For sister, she might put it in "sleeping" mode, and when she feel like to use it, she simply press the key to activate the system again. Without going through all these booting sequence sort of thing. So, what is the harm if you don't turn off your computer completely for a long period of time? Would the hard ware within simply burn out due to the heating?

I have all my home pc's on a network 3 of them actually, and have never turned them off. Each and everyone of them are remote access so they must be left on in the event we want to login form anywhere. Turning them off will not allow us to do so.
In fact the one I am on now I have not turned off in 4 years. I do from time to time re-start it to refresh it but would never turn if off as it has become a habit. I cannot say we have higher electric because of it a I have not noticed any increases outside of the cost itself increasing every year.
I am a very avid IT person so this has helped me as well.

Thanks for your comment, so you didn't notice any increase on your bill actually? That is a pretty good approach.

My habit is to turn off PC when I finish my work but now a days I have a problem, when ever I turn it off then it is very difficult to start it, I dont find any display on the screen and after pushing power button a lots of time then display comes, so now a day I just log off and dont put the PC on sleep or turn off, it is always on.

I do it when I have my laptop plugged in.The reason that I only do it when it is plugged in and not on battery power as for some reason i can't reduce my brightness level when i am unplugged after i come back from sleep mode. This happens around 50% of the time and i do not feel like resetting my computer as it really drains my battery. If i want to save my current work i use hibernation , that way i am sure that i will be able to reduce the brightness level using the function key.

I will always switch it off when I'm not using anymore. I don't put it in sleep mode because it's a waste of electricity even it saves time. Furthermore, my PC is bit slow due to low RAM and it's faster for me to restate it than waking it from sleep mode. While the other reason is, I tens to log off from whatever sites I'm on and it makes no sense to leave the PC on sleep mode when I have to go through the process of logging in to check for mails etc.

I like put in sleeping mode because it easy and i often sleeping in front computer anyway but if i don't use comp for 2h and above, i turn off my computer.
Anyway windows 7 now have auto hibernation so hibernation actually much better and save electricity too but maybe can harm your system so turn off is definitely still the best.
