My parents usually buy me a phone card to bring with me. Now I mostly text and use facebook on my mobile while traveling. I've heard that skype has becoming more and more popular.

Skype is more popular for making the video calls. If you only wants to make the call and talk with your friends and family then phone card is good one.

I used to keep in touch with letters, postcards and phone calls. When I was aged 20 years old it took a minimum of five days to for a letter to go from Australia to England. A parcel by sea mail took six to eight weeks. I sent a number of parcels home from Australia. When I traveled to South Africa last year I sent 10 postcards to friends and family. It was awful to find out none of the postcards ever arrived. When I traveled to Mexico I was surprised to see my mobile phone worked over there. I was able to send text messages to England from all the way over there. These days I use email and Face Book to keep in touch while I am away traveling the world. When I traveled to Canada this summer I brought my net book and I was able to use the Internet at some of the guest houses I stayed at.

I would rather use a phone. Am not much of a traveler but when I do visit our daughter, I use her home phone to make calls. She has free long distance service. The last visit I did keep in touch via the computer also. Skype is a good service and I would recommend it to anyone.

The most handy tool for me to keep in touch is through the cellphone. A text message is the most convenient way to communicate. When I was out of the country and could not access an internet, I just registered my phone for international roaming and I was able to constantly communicate with my family through text messaging.
