One of my dogs just recently passed away and I am still upset over it. Its been about a month. I heard a report on tv the other day that said it could take up to a year for someone to stop grieving over their pet. This dog was very special to me. He was born about 5 minutes before my father died and he had a small white patch on his chest that resembled a cross. I considered him a gift from my father. So, I'm wondering if any of you have lost a pet and how did you deal with it? Also, do you think its wrong for someone to grieve for their pet for a long time?

They are just like a piece of the family, so a loss is a loss. You just need time to get over it, and move on. Maybe find a New puppy to replace it or something?

I'm sorry for your loss. I wish I could say it will be easier soon..but I'm not so sure. I lost my best friend of 18 yrs almost 3 years ago. I still cry about him every once in awhile. Not as bad as it was before, but I still choke up when I think of him. He was just an awesome dog.

I see you posted this 3 weeks ago. I'm sorry for your loss. Everyone is different. I have had many pets over the years. I am a big animal lover. However, I have noticed that I grieve over some more than others. I actually still grieve and cry for a cat that I had for 17 1/2 years. It's been 14 years since his passing. Your feelings are not right or wrong, they are just emotional feelings. You will grieve as long as it takes for the pain to dull. It's just like loosing a family member, it hurts the same. I waited 5 years until I got another cat. But, I never could bond to it, as I felt guilty to the one I loved so much. Well, resently we adopted another kitty, and it's wonderful. But, there are times, I still miss that one special one. Good luck and God bless you. Go at your own pase, and don't let people confuse how you feel.

You can't tell anybody else how to grieve but I think that one year is more for a relative, but if you were very close to your pet it could take that long.
