Yes I get this once in a while. It causes some seconds of panic until I remember what it is and relax. Once I have relaxed it goes away quickly.

sleep paralyzes? I just know the name from your discussion now. but, I got the sleep paralyzes sometimes. my body can not move after my eyes open from my sleep. It is disturbing me, you feel like some one "ride" you, then you can not wake. but, my cousin often got sleep paralyzes, even she can not speak when she got it. you can imagine how it's feel.

I have experienced sleep paralysis many times and I have never seen a hallucination during it. The cause for sleep paralysis is actually because your body releases a hormone to paralyze your body during sleep so that you do not act out your dreams, ie sleep walking. It often happens when someone has a shocking dream that wakes them up. The waking is so sudden that the body doesn't have enough time to get all the hormone out of their body. It is not actually as bad as it sounds. It is no big deal at all. The only reason it can be a bad experience at all is because people don't understand what is happening and panic. Sleep paralysis is a very quick experience, only a few moments.

Sleep paralysis is said to occur to most of the people at least once in their life time. The scientific explanation to this experience is that, when we are just at the point of waking or at the point just before going to complete unconsciousness, the brain triggers the signals to be awake before it initiates the motor skills, which triggers our different body movement control. This 'abnormal' condition makes the person awake but unable to move his body or talk, at such a state making the 'dreamer' in a panic, or frightening state. Ancient people often believed it as 'evil spirit' or alien abduction.
