Whatever happened to the customer is always right?

I went to the post office to close my po box today. The rent is up on Sunday anyway. The lady would not take my keys because I had not done an official "change of address." I told her I've been contacting each one specifically with my new address. (it's not like I get that much mail anyway!) But she insisted. So I stuffed my keys in my pocket and rode off on my bike. She will not see the keys again and they will have to close my box down Sunday because I am not paying for more time! I'll do the forwarding address thing, but it's not like it works anyway. I never got one piece of forwarded mail the last time I tried to do it that way. That's why I have been contacting each individual bill etc. Oh well, her loss. She would not even listen to me or consider what I was saying... anyone need a couple of extra keys?

Isn't that just the dumbest thing? I have a PO box and if I change, yeah, do your own address change because you can't trust the PO to forward them properly. They do some, but others they don't. I have had mine for 5 years.. and still get stuff from the previous owner and in the beginning I contacted him myself and he said he put in a forwarding address!! Yeah I know they have to go by the box number but still....if I close mine...and they put it in the box... I still won't get it. So doing the address change myself is the only way to do it. If they don't want your key back, oh well! Like you said...if you don't pay for the box, they will close it, they just make it hard on themselves. Plus....unless I miss my guess...it is not a requirement that you put in a forwarding address from/to anywhere when you move! I"d just put the key in an envelope...state your case.. and drop it in the mail slot or give it to a person and be done with it. Possibly they could charge you for not returning the key, in my case it'sonly a buck as that is what I paid for it and I closed on few years ago and they gave me the buck back when I turned the key in..

I didn't move! I was using the PO box while I was staying with people. I got my apartment six months ago and have gradually changed all my mail over to the street address. But they didn't want to hear that! I don't mind giving a forwarding address (doesn't mean I will get any!) but I already have my mail coming to the house. Figured I just as well save that $40 a year!

Haha, I know dealing with customer service professionals can be difficult. I myself have had some very interesting experiences with the postal service. But we have to remember that their job is to follow the rules, strictly. It was not the associates fault that the rules had to be followed. There are still companies that give great customer service though. Apple is one of them. I have also had really great experiences with Lowes.

Yes, I understand that. However, what she would not let me explain was that the rent is due Sunday and I will not be paying it. Too bad for them!

I think the saying "the customer is always right" is a thing of the past. I can't believe the amount of poor customer service I receive on a daily basis. Good for you keeping the keys. I don't understand why the post office requires a change of address for a post office box. I have a p.o. box for my husband's business and when we moved, I don't believe they ever asked for a change of address...or at least making it a requirement.

Well, maybe they did. However, I have already done that with all those I want to stay in business with! I filled out the forwarding address and mailed it today. She would not listen to me... so I have the keys still....

For sure. She didn't even want to listen to me and what I had to say. She just kept shoving papers at me! I was like, okay. So I walked out and they will close the box for non payment on Monday anyway!

Yeah, except they are so big that they don't care any more. I will try to keep as much as my money out of their hands as I can but we are all kinda stuck with using them as they are the only ones to offer the mail service.

Im sorry, but the customer is not always right. That saying came from the IDEA of great customer service. I have worked with many companies in the past where i had to deal with many upset customers. Some had good reason where as others did not. Customers like to believe theyre always right however that isnt the case. I have had many customers where i had to calm down only for them to realize how childish they are acting. Ex: customer has a damaged cell phone... comes in yelling, like a crazy person, about how X company are thieves and provide awful customer service. After a superfluous confrontation i turn the phone over to show them the sticker revealing water damage. This is when they go red and realize they have been caught. This happens on an on going bases and companies now are forced to inflict certain rules and regulations(ex: an official change of address, which protects your security), to ensure that all honest customers are treated the best way possible. So no customers are not alwas right, however it is the employees resposible to make the customer feel as though they have been treated fair, respectfully, and with the greatest quality of service

What you say is true. People are crazy customer or not! But there should be an attempt to handle it all civily. This lady would not listen to me and I would not argue. I smiled, took the papers and stuck the keys in my pocket...

What happened is that the customer is not always right. If that is the policy then you have to follow the proper channels to achieve the end you want. You can't just skip steps because you don't feel like it. If you've had bad experiences with the change-of-address not working, then contacting the individual parties is your prerogative, but that doesn't exempt you from following mailing policy/law and filing the change of address.

I understand that. I do not have a problem filling in the forwarding address. But I am not going to pay the po box rent that is due Sunday. In my thinking I went there to fill out the paper work and turn in their keys that are now sitting on my printer as I won't have the time to go back for some time. I only go about once a week to check the mail anyway and barely have any then!

It is so unfortunate but people do not care anymore about anything the customers have to say. I know what you are saying as I have a PO box and my mail has been screwed up for two years.
I do not blame you as I would have done the same. If only employees took ten seconds to explain things life would be a gem. For them and us. Equally.

All she had to do was listen for I was telling her I'd done change of addresses for each individual bill already. I was going to fill out her paperwork anyway, just didn't find it out where you can get it anymore. You have to ask one of them for it now.
