What did you first make of having the internet?

In the days of dial up, it very frustrated me but I always liked it. The first company that my parents used charged you like a traditional phone bill, this made it very expensive to use and so we had to limit the time we was on. Back then most sites seemed to be very basic and there was only the lycos community that I really used. Most of my browsing time was spend doing my homework and looking up facts about movies, television and such.
Back then I didn't really see it becoming as powerful as it is today and it's been really interesting follow certain sites progression.
I first got connected back in 2002 and broadband was around 2007, the years before broadband pretty much seemed like the dark ages. How about you? Care to share your experience of having the internet around?

hi joey when I first got on the net we had dialup and that was so slow and pokey and too there was not much really good stuff on the net, mostly p laces to download music and pictures but then in 2004 we got dsl and it was much faster and you could use your phone and still be on the net. there were a lot more stuff on the net then two years ago I got cable jack rabbit which was faster yet than dsl. Also there was so much new things on the net it was pure heaven to get on and just browse.I have learned so much and had so much pure enjoyment its not fun. three cheers for the internet and cable jack rabbit connections.

Hehe.
Hey there Hatley! How are you?
Yes I can pretty much relate to everything you said, I wasn't all that addicted to the internet when dial up was very common and once broadband came about I really think I started sleeping next to my computer. (well maybe not) It did feel sometimes that I did though.. LOL
The progression of sites is something that really amazes me, looking back at the old styles it's hard to think we once used sites like them.
Thanks for responding.

I'm still on dialup because it is cheaper. My main purpose is to look up information, and don't need to download movies or music or the like, so it suits me just fine.
My first company was AOL at version 3.0. That was the best version ever for chat. Once they started upgrading after that, chat became more bogged down with the features. I think I finally gave up on chat rooms by the time AOL 6.0 came around.
Pity how an upgrade can turn out to be unusable, when the original version worked just fine. Oh well.
So I just use message boards like this one to communicate with users. Terrible compromise, but that is what the companies give us.

That's actually very interesting, is it any faster now?
I know awhile back companies said due to the popularity of the internet speeds on dial up was extremely slow as they couldn't reach higher speeds with the share volume. I don't know if this makes much difference to you but I would be interested. :)
Thanks for sharing your response and views with me.

I love it it was a gateway to the world, but I didn't understand the various internet packages and I had paid loads of money in the hundreds of dollars for the first two months until I could get it all sorted out.

Back in 1994 we had AOL. It was dial up, however it wasn't very slow because not that many people were on the internet back then. It was nice when you did searches, because the internet was so new, it didn't come back with all the sites that it does not and it wasn't so overwelming. I remember I started on a site called the Imagination Network. It had little cartoon avatars and I actually thought it was something my oldest son would enjoy. It turned out to be a gaming site with chat rooms and stuff like that. It was quite popular back in the day. Wow! How things have changed.

I used the Internet a bit during school. Nothing much more than the basics, just really knowing how to navigate things, type things in a search engine, look up basic information. The Internet connection was decent but obviously it was something that was not blowaway given the fact that it was a school computer. Therefore it was just fine. Not good, not bad, just fine.
I remember my first Internet connection. It was really, really, bad. It was a small local company that I doubt is even around again. It was dial up, something that was completely awful. It really increased the phone bill. The pages took sometimes minutes to load and if it stayed connected for an hour. We didn't stick for it for that long but those first couple of months were on it and those were the longest couple of months to say the very least.

I think it was like 2001 and yes as you I too had dial up and thought at the time it was the best thing. How things have evolved, as I can not imagine returning to dial up.

Thanks for sharing HWG :)
I thought it was cool too, although my schools connection was faster and I found my home connection very annoying.

I remember having dial up, and the kids wanting to be on line all the time. Not my kids but my nephews who lived with me. I played a lot of games, and did some searching. I just never would have dreamed all of the things that we could do.

I didn't really care about the internet until I was 14. My parents got the internet then, and eventually I got online to see what the big fuss was. I still wasn't too impressed. But as my friends started getting online as well, I got more interested in it. It's hard to imagine things without the internet now.

I started a bit before microcomputers had been invented, by getting access at the computer center of the university I attended. Back then everything was dial-up at 110 baud which took about a whole minute to load a page of just text and the access cost $60 an hour, or something ridiculous like that. Before it was possible to go buy a microcomputer in a store I got a friend to help me build one from a kit. I think we did that in 1979. LOL, 202 the dark ages? No, I'd say the dark ages were when they used punch cards, before floppy disks were invented. Floppies were primitive compared to the storage we have now, but remarkable in their own time.

My first introduction to the internet was indeed very awkward. I really didn't know what i was doing. It was like a puzzle with so many pieces missing. Now the internet and I are very good friends.

that is right pal. dial up was so frustrating. the times that i cannot use it is far more than the times i can use it. terrible! like i cannot finish any report or research so i will still have to go to internet cafe. still useless and just a waste of electricity because everything takes so long. when i had my broadband internet first i made sure i could find some interesting sites to gain knowledge then later on i decided to search for some earning sites.

The first time that I used the internet I was around 12 years old and it was dial up that I used.It was not until just 4 years ago that I got a wireless high speed internet connection. When I got that kind of speed I really found it to be impressive and though that it was quite a wonder.Nowadays people treat the internet as a right when it is a privatize that they have and they are lucky to be able to use such a large interconnected network anywhere in the world virtually and have constant contact with people thousands of miles away.

Our first internet connection was dial up and initially we did not use it very much. If and when we did use it, we could not use the phone. It was slow and a pain hooking up. Then we got broadband, finally we got a package with a flat internet rate of 21 euro a month and I think we are now connected 24/7. I could no longer imagine a day without internet.
