Of escalators and life…

I had some free time at lunch today, so I went to the mall to walk around. I was up and down the escalators and seeing people doing the same, when this discussion hit me.
Do you think that your approach to life is like how you ride an escalator? Are you the type to walk/step on escalators? Meaning you always try to get ahead in your life?
Or are you the passenger type who just waits until you get to your destination? Which could be up or down.
Do you take double steps? Which could be interpreted as doubly ambitious in trying to get to your goals. Do you always follow the rules? Which is stand right, or walk left? Or do you flop in the middle and hold others back?
I think I am the first type, how about you?

Great post! When I was younger , I was a step on and wait to reach the top . I would hold on and hope I make it. But I wouldn't follow Any rule that didn't make sense! But I wouldn't move once I took that first step. Now , know I can move And not fall or hurt anyone, I step up and walk to the top.I may hold on to the rail from time to time but I do walk up.

I have never compared life to an escalator before. I have think of the many ups and downs they both take. Life is like an escalator though. We can ride it and let it pass us by or we can take the steps to reach the top on our own. when i ride a escalator, i'm not ready to just stand and ride. i want to skip the steps to the top, I don't like just being a passenger. i want to have some say in my destination.

This is kind of bizarre, that you started this discussion. I just finished reading a book where this girl is trying to get over her ex-boyfriend (yes, it happened to be chick lit..) and the author/narrator (whatever) was writing about how life is like an escalator - it just keeps going regardless of what happens in your life, and also that you should enjoy the sights while you "live" or ride the escalator. Honest to god. So this is bizarre (I just finished the book about an hour ago). Anyway, I guess I could stop rambling and actually answer the discussion.. Umm, yes! Life is a journey and we just need to get through it, however cliche that sounds. At the same time, I feel like anything can really be a metaphor for life - but this is a good one. I don't really feel like I'm getting anywhere at the moment, as far as life goes, so no, I can't say I'm bounding up the escalator stairs - sometimes it actually feels like I'm trying to run UP the escalator that's going down! Meaning that I feel like I'm not really making much progress at all, just getting out of breath. LOL.

Hello maezee. First of all, whatever that book you just read, honest to goodness, I don't know about it. But I'm glad that I'm not alone in my observation that life is sometimes like an escalator.
And you just helped me add a category to my examples which I have not thought. Running opposite the direction of the escalator. I have been in that stage in the past. Currently I'd like to think that I'm moving along the right direction.
Now to you, if you feel that you're in this stage in your life, then the solution is simple. You just have to stop, turn around, and ride the escalator (of life) for a bit. And as soon as you get to the bottom, turn around, take a step to the right, and then ride the (other) escalator back up. I'm sure you'll reach the top!

Hi bounce. I'm the type of person who rides the elevator when feeling lazy to take the stairs. So when riding the elevator, I'm really relaxed and not in a hurry to my destination. I notice some people who overtakes and goes ahead of me, treating the elevator like the stairs. But I'm not this type. I try to enjoy my elevator ride. :) For me, riding the elevator is a luxury, especially in the city where I work where there are lots of underpass and walkways. I always stifle a groan when I notice that the elevator is not working or already off by 8pm.

I think I know you too well arystine!
I think the reason you try to enjoy your rides, is that you work too hard. And that if the only time you could take a little bit of your time is through these elevator or escalator rides, then you take it.
Here's hoping that you get more elevator or escalator rides! And that it all goes up!

You know what's the effect on me after answering this discussion?
I remember you when I ride the escalator. NOT elevator, as what I erroneously posted in this discussion. I must have been really tired when I answered this that I typed "elevator" instead of "escalator."
And yeah, I agree that you're beginning to know me too well. :)

Depends on the situation. While generally law-abiding, I tend to follow my own rules. Sometimes, I am happy to stand still and daydream while life/escalators take me where they will. Other times, I'll be impatient and take the steps two at a time. I am happy to stand aside for others - unless they barge me and show no manners - in which case, I may block them on purpose.

Funny that you say 'daydream', because that's what I often do, when I decide to be just a passenger of whatever escalator that I am in.
And yes, it also depends on the day. I certainly do have days where I want to double skip steps, and day-dreaming days as well.
Thanks.

If you put it in that context, then your personality does call for being unique. Just because you don't want to be pegged on the escalator, and you'd rather be in the elevator. And it does say something about being just a passenger, because you can be the same at both, at the elevator or the escalator.
Thanks.

I more of a fast and out of control escalator where as my body and brain are in sync. Always trying diligently to pick up the pace of life. Sorry it is me, as I have always had to take care of me and well with this new life I have been quicker on the brain and thoughts at all times.

I think I am more like an elevator. I try to get places faster out of impulse. Instead of slowly moving forward on stepping stones, I have always wanted and went about things instantaneously. I need to learn how to slow things down a bit, in order to reach my goals more efficiently. Most things do not happen overnight, right?!
