My Hubby Collect Traded Paperback Comics Books, How much is too much?

Comic Books - These are the trade paperback comic books of my husband. He said these items valued much for a fan or just a collection with sentimental value. These items are said to be rare as it was book paper backs of superhero stories dating back the 80's and 90's era. He has this collection since we was a student from a university and was brought upon to our house when we had live already together. These photos shows how a man with attachment to his childhood ways can collect things for the purpose of attachment and commemoration of his past... But I say they are marvelous...

Hi... I want to share you some story about my husband that I learned when we are already living in one roof. It fascinates me... He has novelty items of good and quality stuff. He said most of the items he collected are rare since most dates back in 80's and 90's era. When I open the pages, to my surprise, these comic books are Superhero comic books and it seems that he loves these. He said he does not collect for a particular line or collection of superhero, if he believes that it is good... He acquires it. And he said to me his collections are brand new and he acquires it as first owner. Wow.. truly amazing to learn that the collection really are amazing work of art and has stories that for me... its really crafted well and addictive. And I learn something that these comic books does not only appeal for kids.. it is more likely for young and adults. As I see his collection, oh... yes i believe those are worth collecting since the story lines are too great... Imagine there was a time that Superman Died and Resurrect? Theres a Hi-Tech Batman? And there are parallel worlds in concept of these comics... And a lot more, and I do believe its more concentrated on DC and Marvel character. The stories are appeal, wow talk about creativity... He said he was touched by these stories and ideology and sometimes he was molded by these collections he has... After sometime, I, as a non collector, thought that with those piles of collection he has, it is just enough... Every now and then he check out bookstore and book ordering and will save some money to get something he want. It surprises me because I thought that the collection thing ends with his moving to a different role... being a husband and a father. But again, he did not stop. He said he wants to share most of these to our kids and these after time and time as passed will give a much higher value and might worth more than double of the items... I dont know this things, it maybe valuable but I think he will not let go any of those collection even triple the price... I do not know what to say about this. Will I just let him continue what he started since his teens days? The collection he has is still piling up until now though there are times that he regret that he can not have some more rare item due to money issue. Now, can you share a little of your feeling about this? I think those items really has sentimental values to him... How will I compromise about our family budget and his hobby? How much is too much already? Just asking... maybe there are other collectors out there or partners of collectors that can share their views or anyone who wants to give some of their thoughts about this... Thanks for dropping by...

Collecting comics is not just a hobby anymore, many people get into it because of the value of the books. For example, key issues of any story line are always worth more than regular issues, and they sell out much faster, are harder to find, and sell for a higher value than regular books. The Trade Paperback Books, or TPB's are a compilation of a number of books in one soft cover graphic novel. These sell for more in the stores because they consist of more than one title, usually 5 or 6. They are not as valuable since they do comprise of several books, not as valuable as single books. Comics with variant covers can be worth more, just depends on the cover itself, who the artist is usually. The valuable books should not be shared, no matter what simply because they are so valuable. You can get a lot of money for the right ones if you get them graded by the CGC. My husband has 6 boxes of comics and his collection is growing all the time. I keep telling him to stop buying them that we can't afford them, but he'll never listen to me. You have to know when to draw the line though.

Hi kris182_2000, Hmmm.. Seems we are into the same predicament eh... "High-Five!!!" Yes, my husband also have those, comics in great collection and the stuff were stored and filling up our book cases and the other ones were kept on boxes and he said to preserve the "mint" condition. There are also those trade paperback that he did not open until now... What he will do with that? Preserved? Hahahaha... Just kidding. Though I think it is a collectors idea or something to do with it. Thanks for sharing your experience with this discussion... Until then...

You're welcome. It's not easy to deal with a husband who collects so much.

it's a matter of pace ma'm. Collecting is great, and there are time when you can't wait to get your hands on something, But if you can't have it now, you can't have it now. Boys=comics/toys/whatever, girls=bags/shoes/spa treatments bla bla bla... But you know what, at the end of the day, if it is productively fulfilling and non-intrusive, then it's worth the buy
