Which camp are you in?

Farting is either a disgusting, inappropriate, embarrassing and annoying side effect of digestion that should be avoided at all costs, especially in public, or it is a constant source of amusement, humor and bonding. Which camp are you in and why? I'm not telling you which camp I'm in, but my mom could rip them off with the best of farters. DISCLAIMER: THIS DISCUSSION WAS POSTED BY DAWN'S EVIL TWIN DUSK. Being as I am a fe-type-male, I find it an embarrassing side effect of digestion, that can be a source of amusement - if it happens to someone else. Because of my allergies to certain foods, I sometimes have reactions that lead to very foul smelling gas. But for VOLUME alone, you'd be hard pressed to beat Maggiepie, she once let one rip that we heard on the other end of the house, through 2 closed doors!

Aren't we all supposed to do it discreetly? Well there are some that are uncontrollable, loud and smelly, hopefully that only happens at home and not in public. When will Dusk revert back to Dawn?

Hubby claims there are no farts, just barking spiders. He would entertain the little old men in the nursing homes by calling them that. It seems that farting is something people with Alzheimer's still relate to. He has quite a collection of them (barking spiders). I prefer mine not go out in public. But boy do they party at home. They like good food.

Okay not to side step around this discussion, but I have to tell you Dawn I always save your discussions for when I am having a bad part of my day, because your discussions always make me laugh. This particular discussion had me rolling on the floor!! So first let me tell you thank you. Now on to the discussion...My mother always raised us girls to excuse ourselves into the bathroom if we have to "pass gas". Which is what I always did until I was married and had a few boys that introduced me to the wonderful new world of burbing and farting in public. They make a contest out of it. I have to say I was appalled at first, and now I just find it amusing. I still run out of the room which my kids and hubby find hysterical and they strain to listen when I am in the bathroom to see if they can hear mom "break wind". My middle son can bag off the loudest farts, I swear you would think a semi is driving through the house. On the weekends, we can always tell when he is awake because the walls practically shake!!!!

Ok, now that is gross! However, growing up in Chicago, a lot of the guys used to write their name in the snow while peeing!!!

Ha ha! I didn't know there was a farting interest! I'll have to go check out the other discussions in this category! I'm not telling what camp I'm in if you're not - ha ha - but I'll tell you it was perfectly acceptable for the adults to do so in my family. I don't know if it was a culture thing . . . but I do remember even my aunts and uncles doing that at the table and no one really cared! Nice to meet you "Dusk"!

Haha. Farting is natural. Our bodies are amazing. Sure it stinks but as long as you don't do it in an enclosed area around others, you're right. Sometimes my sister and I have farting competitions. One of us farts and the other answers. Yeah it's gross but like you said, it is a bonding experience! There's no need for being shy or embarrassed about farting. It is a natural bodily action. Just don't get carried away and be careful not to shart.

Isn't it odd that there can be so much controversy over a natural bodily function? I mean, geez, we ALL do it! Some of us are more discreet about it, granted, but we all fart. I couldn't say I'm in either category, actually. Well, more like I'm in both categories. There's a time and place for farts because they CAN be funny... downright hysterical at times! When I was VERY pregnant with my second son, my husband was lying on the sofa watching TV and I was sitting in a chair, picking the Christmas turkey off the bones. (Christmas was over, of course.) It was very quiet, except for the TV, and he (my husband, not the turkey) let out a fart with no attempt to be diplomatic about it. I swear it sounded EXACTLY like a racecar speeding past! Quieter at first, then real loud, and quieter at the end. If I had had my eyes closed, I would have said it WAS a racecar. Anyway, I burst out laughing and, being so very pregnant, started to pee. I laughed myself all the way upstairs to the bathroom with my pants getting wetter with every step because I could NOT stop laughing, not even if my life depended on it. So, although I think there are places where one should at least attempt to control their farts, some of them can be awfully amusing, can't they?

Oops, almost forgot! I used to call them "air bugs". Hearing a fart meant a bug was in the vicinity. If it was stinky, that meant that somebody squished it. My kids got a lot of laughs out of that. Of course, one could always say, "There's that duck (or goose) again!"

Hey dawny...oh, I mean dusk! I guess it's a slow day for discussions hey? Whatever! Not a topic of interest for me exactly since I'm a lady? Or not! But, this happens to be a subject that I'm not an really that much an expert in or that comfortable in discussing! I try to make mine, short, quiet and "sweet"? The bf doesn't seem to care that much. He likes to do his during the night deadly and loud or silent...doesn't seem to care!

I was brought up not to use the eff word. It was referred to (only be necessity) as 'bottom burps'. This may be the reason why we grew up to be anal retentive.

Girl you read my mine. My boyfriends mother, sister and her husband were here for the weekend and when I tell you Yuck, Yuck is right. I thought they brought a rock band with them. The mom would always excuse herself but the others, it would not phase them. Luckily none of them stunk in the process but I think I was much more embarrassed and shamed by their rhythm. Wow, it was like a really bad band playing all day long. What the hooey is up with them.

I think to answer the question one must consider the age demographic. If you are ten years old and under, then I think farting is obviously a source of amusement. If you are over twenty years of age, in the public often and are trying to make your way in the world, I think you will find there is no good time for farting in public. If you are between the ages of 10 and twenty, then you are still learning the art of applied farting, and as yet not forced to choose which fart camp you want to belong to. For advanced thinkers, and those who have control over their body functions, and are able to act with control, instead of reacting, take action with out panic, then you know that stepping out of the way of offense is always the preferred method. For those of you who are advanced in experience, and years, then you know you no longer have to answer to public concerns regarding your ability to function under extreme pressure from gas buildup. And of course any opportunity to avoid unnecessary offense should always be taken.

My take on this is if it comes up in public, try to do it without noise, move away quickly if it smells, mean while give an evil glance to those nearest you in your mind blame them for the smell. The mind thing is important if you don't do that someone will catch on who is the gas originator.

Most of the experiences in my life have shown that those that think that farting is absolutely hilarious are people that are of the XY gender. However, there are some females that think that farting is something that is funny as well. That all said, I do think that for me I am from the set of beliefs that think that farting is something that is disgusting and vile. I hope that I've not offended anyone by my feelings, but that is the way that I feel.

I also wouldn't tell you which camp I belong, butt... I just downloaded an app for my BB called fartboard. It has different kinds in there. My kids had fun sampling all of the sounds. I'm thinking that it'll be a good weapon for social occasions if I don't have the real thing simmering inside me.

I don't find farting amusing, I do find it inconvenient, as I suffer with IBS, and if I don't release wind when it comes, then I can get very sick, so often, I could be in the middle of a very public place when I have no choice but to let one go. I think it's one of the reasons nowadays that I choose to stay home most of the time.

I fall in to both camps, depending on the timing, situation, etc. On the amusement side... My younger sister, when she was little, couldn't pronounce her "f"'s. One day when the pastor was dining with my family, my sister just looked him in the eye and said, "I'm going to bart in your bace". We all started howling; the pastor had no idea what she said or why we were howling. My mom explained the "f" and "b" problem, and then he replied, "It's amazing what comes out of the mouths of babies". We still laugh about it...
