How do I quit smoking for good?

Over the years I've tried numerous times to quit smoking and have always failed. I've gone seasons without smoking, only to have something trigger massive stress and start all over again.
I find that I'm smoking more and more and it's hurting me physically to do so, and I know it's time to quit.
I've tried the patch, it's helped with the painful withdrawals, but this time I simply can't afford a round of them, and need to find an alternative.
I wont chew the gum because I can't stand the taste of it. I'm at a loss as to what to do, and am thinking that only smoking half at a time would help, but I'm hoping I don't smoke as much if I do that.
I am wondering how many packs it will take to cut down completely and if I'd be able to do this before it gets too cold outside, as I can't smoke inside.
Any suggestions or advice?

My significant other quit back in April of 2001. The way he did it was acupuncture. They put some type of object on your ear and when you want to smoke you press it. He stopped smoking and hasn't smoked since. In fact he tried to smoke soon after to see the reaction and he actually got sick. The taste was horrible to him. I don't think its that expensive at all. Good luck to you!

I know the times that I have quit how horrible it's tasted when I've started again.
It's why I want to be done for good.
I'll have to look into acupuncture, I know someone who does it, but I'm not sure if he does it for quitting.

In order to quit smoking permanently, you have to have a great deal of determination to quit. Yeah, it's true that it's hard to quit but come to think of it, if it's really that hard why are there people able to quit smoking like my dad. And he told us that to quit smoking you need determination. As for you I think you can do it because you were able to quit for quite some time and I think that's a good sign because not all people can do it. Just try it until you are fully determined. When you are stress try to do something relaxing than smoking, divert your mind if smoking pops in your mind.

Smoking is not only unhealthy, it can also be very difficult to quit. Whether you started smoking in your teens or whether you started smoking later in life, breaking this habit is a key component to maintaining good health in life and avoiding a number of unfortunate health side effects. Fortunately, there are some things that you can do to make quitting smoking easier. While none of these things will guarantee your success in trying to quit smoking, each can give you a certain boost in terms of increasing your odds. Yes, you can quit smoking. Yes, it can be simple. And no, it does not need to be painful. There is a secret, though. And it does require some work and preparation. There are plenty of reasons to quit smoking. Smokers typically spend a lot of time and energy ignoring the reasons to quit smoking. When the average smoker quits smoking, they end up giving in and sneaking a few here and there so that no one knows. Or they succeed in not smoking for a few miserable days, wishing the entire time that they could just light one up. They never defined a reason of their own to quit.

Well, the best way to quit smoking is to target a goal. Do you have any children? Do you smoke next to them? or even if you don't smoke next to your beloved ones, still there is going to be polluted air and they are going to get hurt. Just remember that by smoking, you are hurting yourself and your family.

Oh my Gosh, we have the same problem Kris... I still can't quit, but slowly I'm trying to avoid smoking, you can try not to buy a pack of it or consume it with limit, avoid some areas or places that you may see some people who are smoking, paste a sticker on you door "NO SMOKING!", or try to be very busy but not so stress to avoid smoking every now and then...you cannot quit it in an instance the power of a successful smoking quitters is that you avoid it slowly and surely....
Hope I can help to ease some of your prob...

I am sorry that I can't have any good answers for you, I am trying to quit and it seems to be the hardest thing in the world to do! I quit on my own before for 3 months and after that I stated again and I know I have been smoking way too much lately and it is difficult to slow down with all the stress. If you find a way let me know? Thanks and Good Luck and have a nice day.

The best way to quit is to find a substitute.
The reason why quiting a habit is difficult is not providing a substitute for the body. This will create a void which the body will instinctively fill and also the reason why you keep returning to the habit.
Try substituting smoking with sweets, chewing gum (I know you said you don't like the taste), chewing on nuts etc.
Good luck.

My mom is having the same issue with smoking and a few things I have seen
her do is instead of smoking was buy some bubblicious and chew on it. I also have seen her buy a bunch of fruit and snack on them instead of smoking. The last thing I have seen her do to not get make herself smoke would be to play pacman and find something else like reading to distract her attention .
These are the things i have seen my mom do to not smoke.
