A radio ad here in Colorado is bashing the Constitution party candidates because the candidates are for making English the official language and that violates the rights of non English speakers (it really says that) and that they support ending congressional pensions, which the ad states would deter career politicians - and this is a bad thing????

Unbelievable! I truly thought this was a plant by the Constitution Party but it is not! Holy crap. What do you think?

I remember when the words "cultural diversity" started slipping in to our vocabulary...and the training we were required to take. Before that we were a "melting pot". Personally, I like the melting pot better, and I support English as the official language. Just think of the millions/billions we'd save not having to say/print/etc. in two languages. And it's always bothered me...why Spanish? Aren't we then discriminating against the French, German, Chinese, Thai, Japanese, etc. who come to America? When my grandparents came to America, they came through Ellis Island. They moved to SD and learned English. When I started school, I spoke German and learned English. If you want to come to America, plan to learn English. As for detering career politicians, I'm for term limits and 401K-type plans like other working people are offered. Pensions wouldn't be available because no one would be allowed to serve 30, 40...years. I'd also reduce/eliminate most of the other "benefits" (govt-provided airplanes, chaffeurs, etc.) the members of Congress and the President's dog and friends now enjoy.

Can anyone explain to me how making English the "official" language of America is discriminating in any way, shape or form?
If there's an argument out there for how it's against someone's "rights," I definitely want to hear it.
And I hope on top of hope that we can somehow deter career politicians.
It says a lot about Americans already that we allow people who take our money to set their own salaries, healthcare packages, pension plans, budgets, etc.
That type of stuff should have to come up for us to vote on 100% of the time instead of allowing them to do it. Self interested much?
Money and how they treat it. Ugg. This is the one thing I've always been hella confused about when it comes to Bill Clinton's band of merry ball huggers. They praise the guy for coming in "under budget" or w/e-the-pluck. But isn't that something politicians set any f'n way?
"Oh, I think I'll allow myself to spend only 500 billion of your money this go 'round. And don't forget to praise me much if I come in at 498!"
The only thing I like about politics is the ample opportunity to rant away about BS that makes absolutely no sense to me.
And STILL nobody can explain even the simplest crap to me - something like why Islam is more hands-off as a religion than Christianity or Judaism if it's not guilt or fear based.
Or how spending money that we don't have, one 0 after the last 0, is somehow going to set a financially stable future.
Or how a fringe of a political party running around making everyone not on their side enemies of the world are somehow to be taken seriously as do-gooders and for-the-people folk.
Someone has to deter career politicians. They'll NEVER limit themselves. And too many people will continue to play sides while both the main R and Ds screw us out of house, home and country.

When I was in Korea Teaching several years ago I read an editorial in Time Magazine - Asian Edition. In this article the author pointed out that in most countries you became a member of that country after several generations of living there. The one exception was the US you became an American when you could speak English. He pointed out that the ability to use the English Language is the common thread and it is the one thing that makes you an American. His conclusion was that they Official Language of America should be English.
