I really don't understand my dog sometimes.

My dog is 9, going on 10, and recently he's developed some rather annoying habits, especially after we moved. I notice often that he will lick things, things you wouldn't think a dog would lick. The door, the carpet, the tiled floor, sometimes even the walls. I really don't understand why he would do that. Then, when he goes outside, he eats the dirt, drinks any water he can find, and eats the grass. When he eats the grass he develops terrible gas, but I can't always stop him, nor can I get him to stop eating the dirt or drinking dirty water. I can't be outside with him all the time. He has a psychological issue with water, he always drinks it even if he doesn't need it, and the more he drinks, the more he pees. This is a problem he's always had, his previous owner had him tested as she worked in a vet clinic. He sits behind the front door, blocking it, so that any time anyone comes home, they have to open the door slowly otherwise they'll smack him with the door. He insists on lying or sitting there, despite having several places that he can go. He was doing that at our old place, I thought it was a protective measure given that we lived in an unsafe neighborhood, but it has continued here. This is a safe area, we've found this out by accidentally leaving the front door unlocked one night when we first moved here. He will sit and silently beg for our food, even though he knows that he wont get any of it unless something drops on the floor, which seldom happens. I guess I'm still trying to get used to having a dog, although we've had him for a year next month. He's a part of our lives, but still annoying sometimes.

Sorry I do not want or mean to offend anyone... but it sounds like having your dog around your home is a hassle for you! Since you mention you are still getting used to having a dog! Believe me my life would have been so miserable if I didn't have my dogs around. I treat every one of them as a family member and loyal companion, we love dogs!!! :) they are my passion and pride, I love being around them and they love being around me and my entire family, you can sense that! It's a great feeling and experience

9 years or 9 months? My dogs are 2 months old. They like to lick the fridge. They lick soil and eat batteries. When I took them for a bath, they licked the water that has soap bubbles on it. Hope they wont get an upset stomach. They like eating papers as well. But they are still little pups. They are such an explorer. It's natural for dogs to eat plants. They cure themselves if they feel they're sick. My dog , 10 years old, had a cough and she just ate some grass in the backyard and then she was cured.

He's 9 years old. I can see him going gray around the mouth and his fur is getting lighter in color. He has as much energy as a young pup sometimes, but most of the time he just lays there and does nothing.

Good for your dog. My 10 year old just sleep, eat and eliminate. She doesn't like to run anymore. Of course, after 11 pups. Poor girl.

I am not very experienced with dogs. I read that when cats start licking weird things they can be anemic or short of other minerals. It can also be a sign of kidney problems. My oldest cat spent some time licking rocks and bricks this summer, then when I started making their food at home, he quit. I also put a drop or two of apple cider vinegar in their water bowl. I believe it is good for them. Maybe your dog needs a doggy vitamin with minerals. If you had n9ot said he had been tested, I would suggest kidney problems or diabetes, because of the constant thirst.

Oh yeah. I've heard of this. That's why we give multivitamins to the puppies. They are growing and needs some supplements. I'll give them Iron later. I forgot about that.

Now! This is the funniest discussion I've ever read. Hi Kris, this is the dog nature of doing those funny thing and behavior. Licking something, that means its want to taste something. Eating dirt, mean its hungry, eating grass mean stomach having problem. as if I'm a dog...it could also mean this dog is not proper train. Nice! Happy Mylotting.

We have lost the instinctive silent communication that we used to share with all creatures. We lost it only because we don't interact with animals as much as we used to. The good news is that dog communication can be quickly learned. You need to learn to be observant and to have patience, which can be difficult for a modern human. Dog and humans both benefit from a little patience and tolerance. This can lead to a friendship beyond compare and a lot less biting, yelling and stress, from both the dog and the human. Most people know a wagging tail means a happy dog - but only if the dog is smiling or cringing. If the dog is growling or barking but wagging his tail, that dog is afraid and not sure of what is going on. Leave that dog alone. That dog may bite, out of fear.

I agree with your comment. Maybe the dog of 9 years needs more affection now as he has approaching elderly age. The person should definitely spend more quality time with his dog and I treat mine like a member of my family, a dog is a life long companion and friend, not something to be put there and expect that they are happy when no attention is being given to them.

I had a dog too. And the things you have mentioned were all normal, I I would be the one to look at it. Eating grass I think is a therapeutic way of dogs to cure themselves. I don't have a strong basis on that but I think my dog gets better when he eat some leaves and poos it out. Dogs are trainable. One factor why he seemed abnormal is because he has to adopt the new environment since according to you have just moved to a new place. Learn from her behavior more and more and be able to know the right way to take care of her. Good Luck! ^_^

Well my pitbull is 6 years old and does everything your dog does except the water thing. Grass and dirt helps their stomachs digest certain item which they might have eating and as for the licking thing well I'm still trying to figure that out but my 3 dogs all do that as well. Weird. Hang in there maybe its nervous or something like that but you can never really know since a dog can't speak and tell us what is wrong.

i can say that dogs are really sensitive when you move licking normally is an adjustment to the home you will see him sticking his nose in the air and stuff and when dogs eat things like what you mentions normally its because he got worms in a natural way dog or any animal will eat grass to make them trow up if they got a bad stomach ache, dogs do need alot of water more than you may know, sometimes they look at you its a sense of telling you. Yo! i need to walk i need you right now even i need water as a pet owner you need to understand your pet as your pet will understand you, you got this pet for the past ten years and he now you move so don't be alarm just give him the love and attention the he may need people really don't understand that dogs are like children don't matter how old they may get at times they will do so weird things, but if you really take a good look at him you may see the answer right in front of you all the time, my suggestion is for you to give him a worm out sometimes the vet do but it don't work buy some human worm medicine and give it to him, and its always wise that you look at his stool if there is a slummy thing on it its really bad worms and you need to get him wormed asap or even trowing up take good care of your animal he will take good care of you.
