I can't get my sound to work

I got an old computer from a pawn shop until I can get a new one. It had windows 98. I was able to get sound. I have a windows 2000 professional disk so I did an upgrade. I there was no sound adjustment on the tray. I went to sounds and multimedia to add it. On the sounds tab the sound level is all the way down and you can't drag it up. I did have sound when i had 98. what do I do?
