How do you decide which places to visit?

My husband and I would like to visit England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland the next time that we get the chance to travel. We are not going on vacation in the near future, because we spent most of our savings on the last trip, but we might be able to travel again in 2012 or 2013. Today I borrowed a guidebook about the UK in order to read something about the different areas. We are not going to make detailed plan yet, but I would to read some of it now to get a kind of introduction. Many places sound interesting and it will be hard to choose the places that we want to visit. How do you decide which places you want to visit when you plan a trip? Guidebooks? The internet? Advice from friends? Something different? If you visit a country where you haven't been before do you prefer to focus on one place for instanse the capital or do you prefer to visit different parts of the country?

Hi Killer1VN and welcome to Mylot! Don't worry about your English, I don't think that you are bad at it and your post is easy to read and understand I love travelling and I think that it must be interesting to have a sister who is a tour guide especially when you get the chance to travel with her. I am happy to hear that you visited my country (Denmark) I also find it hard to decide which places to visit, because there are so many places that sound interesting and so many places that I would like to visit.

No, I have never been to Vietnam, but I would like to go there. It is quite far away from my country, so I need to save up money before I will be able to visit Asia. It is one of my dreams to travel in Asia and visit many different countries.

Hi Porcospino!. Me and my family planning go to Bali this year. Maybe if we lucky we can spend new year there. I am not really excited go there because I know its will be crowded but my dad wanna go there. He have not go there if I were prefer to place thats not to crowded like Bali maybe Lombok. Honestly there one thing who made don't like it to go there with my parent. You can call me old fashion but its really not comfort to see half naked woman with you dad.

I have never been to Bali, but I have heard about the place and seen some pictures. I also prefer places that aren't too crowded. My husband and I recently travelled around in Europe for one month, and we had chosen to travel in September and October and instead of July or August where there are lots of tourists everywhere. At some places there were very few tourists and the hotels were almost empty.

I like to borrow travel guide books from my local library. They are books likely to be Lonely Planet, Rough Guide and a few others because of their excellent content. Then I can see if the accommodation costs are affordable. I am able to read about the destinations in the particular places in the country that I am reading at that time. For example I know that the Philippines has lovely looking palm fringed islands because I have read about them and seen them in pictures. I wish to go there one day. When I planned my world trip I used a magazine from Trail Finders and Lonely Planet Books. Years later I got into using the Internet and use it to look at flight prices asking myself if I can afford them. I haven't been to Thailand yet but I know that I would be able to afford a flight there and the accommodation. I wish to visit Japan but I wonder if the flight price would be expensive and I don't know about their types of accommodation. I would get a train timetable and a weeks pass on it for that country. In 2009 I went to Cape Town and the Garden Route Then in 2010 I went to Vancouver. I am wondering where to travel to in 2011. I have more reading to do before I decide. It might be in South America, Central America or Asia that I end up traveling to. Like Colombia, Costa Rica or the Philippines possibly. In 2012 I hope to be able to travel on the train that goes all the way from Moscow to Beijing via Mongolia. There are lots of places on my travel wish list. My daughter will be two years old in June so a trip before then is a certainty.

In my country Lonely Planet is very popular, every once in a while I also see Rough Guide at my local library, but Lonely Planet is generally easier to find. We also have a very popular Danish guidebook, but I usually prefer Lonely Planet. I think that Lonely Planet is more useful when you travel on your own like I do. I also use the internet when I plan a trip, it is a nice way to find information about tickets and accomodation. I often use sites like hotels.com or hostels.com to find accomodation, that way I am able to see the prices and everything else before I decide where to stay. I also buy plane tickets online, and sometimes I have been able to find some cheap tickets online, and it is nice that I am able to compare the different airlines before I make my decision. Travelling by train from Moscow to Beijing sounds like a very interesting experience. I would love to travel on the transsiberian railway one day That is one of my dreams. I have never been to Russia, but if I get the chance to go there, I would like to fly from Denmark to St Petersburg, I would spend some days there and then I would go to Moscow. I would spend some days there as well and then I would travel from Moscow to Beijing or maybe to Vladivostok...

When we plan to have a trip or vacation, of course we will choose the place to visit according to our budget. If we have enough budget, we will go to Paris, but if we only have a little amount of money, we will only tour within our country Philippines.

My husband and I do the same thing. We like to visit other countries, but sometimes we choose to stay in our own country instead, because that is less expensive than travelling abroad. There are many islands in my country, I have been to some of them, but there are still plenty of places to explore within my own country. Paris is a beautiful place, I have been there some years ago and I would like to go back one day.
