bestfriend becomes ex......ex becomes bestfriend...possible?

Well, after my previous discussion about my ex and my husband, now I would like to ask is it possible or be acceptable that your ex will become your bestfriend....or your bestfriend will become your ex and after the relationship end he/she will still be your bestfriend...? what do you think?
