So for me apple and iphone in reality never existed at all considering features and price but as regards others surely they are good and improved in relation to many models:Personally between these i like more nokia because normally they have a real quality hardware and even features or performances are improved especially for the n sries models.
samsung is a good alternative so may be in this period where a phone is important even from the software and os choices on sasmsung phone you can find almost all kind of os may be there si no much support after your sale and so in amny cases people can feel a little bit alone but in general samsung phone are affordable especially,as in nokia case, regards the multimedia functionalities.
Sony ericsson never convicted me too much..phones are ok but in many cases they will create phones for music/entertainment and in some cases they are too expensive.
so i think that as regards classification in my opinion should be:
1.nokia
2.samsung
3.blackberry
4.htc
5.palm
6.sony

I've had numerous experiences with all the above companies, and this is what I can say of them:
1. Apple: They do have a good Operating System, they have some really sleek designs. However, these don't change the fact that they're control-Freaks. Once you buy an iPhone, everything is "Apple-ized", everything is Apple-centric. Dare you try to step out of their domain, you shall be smitten with non-compatibility and a paperweight device! And that's the only reason Apple never strikes a chord with me. You can't use bluetooth for any purpose other than A2DP, you NEED iTunes, etc. etc. A lot of people don't mind that, and they're very happy.
2. Samsung: They have their ups and downs. I've never really been a fan of their Phones, but some of them have left me amazed. I have their Samsung GT-I9000 now... and man oh man! 'nuff said! :)
However, it's only their high-end phones that are more reliable than the low end ones.
3. Nokia: Agreed. Always consistent. Always have loved it, always will continue to. Durability, consistency, performance - that's Nokia. Although, I did get quite bored with their Symbianese... it's been a long time, and I admire their loyalty towards Symbian. It's good in terms of performance, but the UI just doesn't do it for me anymore, especially after I got sucked in the Black hole which is Android.
Other than that, Nokia will always be at the top of the list for me.
4. Sony Ericsson: They're alright, good design, but always revolving about the same thing. Durable phones, but sometimes quite buggy. And when it comes to software updates, especially for Android - they're living in the Dark Ages.
Another company which I'd like to acknowledge here is:
5. HTC: They're 'quietly brilliant', and perhaps that is why they get left out. I'm not so fond of most of their designs. However, when it comes to Software, they're wonderful. They have an amazing Sense UI, are very mindful of Software updates - especially when it comes to their Android handsets. They could perhaps do a bit more with their battery life. They're great nevertheless.
Those are my thoughts! :)

The only brand I know anything about is Samsung, as this is my second smartphone. I wasn't so sure about the Samsung, but now that I have been using it, I am going to stay with it. It has lots of features, and the one thing I like about it is the fact it has a fast processor, which is a 1gigahertz. It loads the pages up fast, and I like too. The screen is really rich and vibrant and can be seen in the sunlight. Not many phone have that feature that is for sure. The cell phone has the Android OS which is the best one I have had so far. I can download lots of apps from the market, just like you can on the iphone. In fact, my cell phone, looks like the iphone as far as the apps is concerned, but much nicer than the iphone, I think. Take care, and have a very good day.
