Are dragons for real?

I know it sounds strange to ask this as researchers never found any trace of them. So why did someone come up with this type of animal then? Its not something that was started lately, its been going on in folk history for a very long time. China has many dragons. So why did they come up with dragons? Have they ever existed since they were talking about it way back in China?
I watched the movie "how to train your dragon" last night and it had me thinking about this. Who invented the dragon?? Maybe there used to be such creatures on earth before a long, long time ago or is it just someone's figment of imagination?

Its hard to believe they never existed since they're been in the minds of people for so long. What Im curious to know is HOW they were invented, would you happen to know since you have a dragon as avatar?

probably the general imagination deriving from some tribal belief mixed the dinos traditions and so they arrive to dragons as creatures...

What a super question.
Hi MagicBubbles, my Eastern Zodiac sign is a Dragon and I love the creatures. You are so right about wondering where they came from and how they came to be. They were/are obviously a popular concept as a myth because the myth has grown to fantastic proportions wouldn't you agree?
There is a huge fantasy world that has been written and drawn around these creatures. Authors and artists have really brought these creatures to life and I for one have walked the many paths in the many lands that I see in my own imagination, fed by the stories and drawings. Are dragons real? They truly are for me.
As a side note...have you ever seen an Australian frilled necked lizard?...I reckon they could have been much bigger and had wings in other times:

Hello Ms Tickle, you're right about the Australian frilled necked lizard. No I had never seen one before and they do look amazing. Lucky us they're not huge lol.
My Eastern Zodiac sign is Snake.
Ive read so many stories with dragons also. Its as if it brings back a memory of something lost. Sounds strange but this is how I feel when I see a picture of a dragon or a movie.
In a way, I wish they were real.
Thank you!!!!

Ihave never thought that dragons were real. I can't even imagine them in the days of King Arthur. i 've always thought of dragons as just being able to live through our fairy tales.

Me too but who came up with the idea in the first place and how could they come up with such a creature that breathes fire is what Im wondering.
We would be in trouble if they were real and living now!!
Thanks!

Dragons are myths. They're like the animals in horoscope or something or the animals in mythology. They're created to symbolize power and whatever They're supposed to symbolize.

Arent the animals in horoscope taken from the design made by the stars in the sky though? Well Im sure dragons arent living today as Ive never seen one, except in movies. But what if they were real a looong time ago?? So what do they symbolize then?
Thanks!

1. There are many lizards, including giant lizards (Komodo dragons, alligators, crocodiles) so it wouldn't be hard for someone to imagine a big, terrifying lizard. Same with horses -- add a horn and you have imagined a unicorn.
2. There used to be huge lizards all over the earth, including ones that could fly. They are dinosaurs. Perhaps in ancient times, people may have found dinosaur bones or fossils and tried to imagine what the animals looked like? And they were so big and terrifying that they made up stories like they could breathe fire.
Just two theories. BTW, I love that movie!

Guess Im not the only one who loved the movie lol.
Makes sense that they'd try to figure out what dinosaurs must have looked like back in those days and saw them as breathing fire.
Thanks!

I think they were real. There have been stories from all over like you said, and not just from China. All these countries had stories about dragons and they had never heard the stories from the other places at the time. Is it possible all these people came up with the same idea, more or less, without having seen something to inspire the thoughts. They are finding new species of dinosaurs all the time, so it could only be a matter of time before they find something. Or maybe they are still around, just in uninhabited areas in the mountains or something. Anything's possible, I suppose.

Sorry it took me so long to reply. You're right, they came up with stories about them in different country way back then. It makes sense that they might be real. I guess we need to wait until someone finds the remains of a real dragon!!
Thanks for your answer!!

I really wish they were. You should also know that there are also english dragons. China's dragon are usually snake-like, being long and slender and usually with a mustache like that of a catfish while english dragons are bulky and dinosaur-like. I also wonder where they got this creature from. Maybe I'll do a research on the origin of this later.
