how is your premature baby doing?

My daughter is 11 months and doing very well. She did everything in time, even though i was told she would probably be late on everything, but she is classified as "underweight" due to the red booklet. They have no guidelines for a premature baby so i feel like i need to start stuffing my baby with more food just to please my health centre. If you had a premature baby where they supposidly "underweight"? Did you just leave them and accept there were going to be smaller then a full term baby?

My daughter was born at 29 weeks. She is three now and you would never know it. My daughter also did everything in the normal time limit and once she did something there ware no stopping her or slowing her down after that, like crawling, walking, running, talking. The talking never stop and she speaks very well for three too well sometimes. She already knows her alphabet all the way through and by site and what sounds they make. I actually found an older doctor that I knew would be so stuck on the charts. He looks at her not the charts he would always show me the charts and say but she was a preemie so you can't really go by this she looks great. I ignored the charts and still do I can't tell you if she is normal now or not, I know she is just fine where she is and it where she needs to be. Feed her if she is hungry she knows better than anyone. My daughter was a big eater until about 2 and then it just stopped one day I guess she finally caught up with herself. Charts are just averages and what you have is a fighter and a special little girl charts will not work for her. Don't feel bad, do what is right for her. I have know people who have been told that their child is short but mom is 5 foot 2 and day is 5 foot 6 so how tall do they expect this child to be? It is crazy they need to not focus so much on charts and actually look at the child all children are different they know that. My doctor always told me that most preemies have caught up by their 2nd birthday. I know that my daughter has caught up and is beyond most of her peers so I am not worried at all my biggest fear right now is that she is going to preschool next year and I don't want her to but she wants to and is ready. Enjoy her while she is small pretty soon she will be too big to carry all the time and then you will miss your underweight baby.

thank you for a story and 29weeks is very early, where you worried? my daughter came at 33weeks, was a horrid experience, i think my health carer needs to accept my daughter is fine the way she is.

I was born weighing 4lbs 4oz and was always faster in things and underweight. However, I'm happy that I was underweight because now at 53 years of age I'm 5'4" and I weigh anywhere between 120 and 125lbs. I wouldn't start stuffing your daughter with food its just going to catch up to her later and then she could end up obese. An obese child is not healthy by any means. Only let her eat when she is hungry. She will be just fine. God Bless and good luck!

thank you for sharing your story, i was just a bit panicky to see she was soo small but i guess it doesnt help that they have no prem baby guidelines.
