Some of you might remember the discussion I started about vinegar 10 months ago. Here is the link for it: http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/2239541.aspx. I learned on the internet not too long ago that vinegar will also cure toenail fungus. I have had toenail fungus just about all of my life and I've been applying vinegar to my toenails using a cotton ball twice a day everyday since I learned this. Sometimes I will apply it three times a day. I think it really works, too! It will take about a year for it to clear up, according to the website. I wish I could remember what the website was. If I could remember it, I would post it on here for those of youall who are interested. I just went to ask.com and typed in toenail fungus. I had to have two toenails removed several years ago due to toenail fungus. They never did grow back but I didn't care. They were the toenails on my pinky toes and they used to itch me too death all the time! They got worse the older I got and I just decided to have them taken off. Here lately, however, the nailbed on my left pinky toe has started itching me again and I thought I would try the vinegar treatment. I used to work as a nail technician and when I went to school to be one, we were taught that it takes 18 months for a new toenail to grow out. That's probably the reason why it takes so long for the vinegar treatment to work.

I just use the over-the-counter treatment for athlete's foot (foot fungus) by slathering it all over the affected nail including the top edge, underneath the nail as far as possible, and around the cuticle area. If you do this once a day, it'll take a lot less than 18 months for the nail to drop off and a new nail to start growing. In fact, I find that it only takes a month or two to see very good results!

What kind of over-the-counter treatment do you use? I used to use Desenex all the time years ago but it's gotten so expensive. I might consider trying what you use if it's not very expensive. I'm living on a pretty tight budget these days. I was looking for a home remedy for toenail fungus when I ran across this article about vinegar. It seems to be helping me and I thought I would share it with youall. Thank you for responding.

This sounds good as I spent a few months ago over US$250 for Lamisil for 2 months and it only temporary solved the problem. I have had a fungus on my finger nails (about 6 of them) since 1995.
I will not be using Lamisil again and then after the first month had to take a blood test to see if it had damaged my liver. All these medications have horrific side effects.

Thanks a lot, I have one toe nail that isnĀ“t too pretty and I have sometimes dropped some Swedish Herbs under the nail. I may work but I have to continue for a long time it seems.
It was good to know about the vinegar though, maybe it is more efficient. It looks like vinegar is very useful for many things.

I didn't know that Swedish Herbs would help toenail fungus. I might want to try this but I live in the states. Would they be available in a health food store? Yes, I'm learning that vinegar is good for a lot of things. Yes, toenail fungus is very difficult to cure and like I said, it said on the website that it would take about a year for the vinegar to cure it.

Yes, I've had toenail fungus just about all my life. My daddy also had it. It's very difficult to cure. Yes, I'm learning that vinegar is good for a lot of things. Some people use vinegar & oil as their salad dressing because it's less fattening than other salad dressings. I've tried it and it is good. I have also learned that vinegar is good to spray on your furniture to keep pets off of it. Vinegar is also good for cleaning windows and mirrors.

Good to know , thanks for sharing. My toenails are more like hooves than nails, ugly old things.

Did you know that horses' hooves are made out of the same substance that fingernails and toenails are made of? Yes, that's true. That's why they have to have their feet trimmed about every six to eight weeks. If they didn't, they would have all kinds of problems like stumbling, for example.

Hey Kathy! That is so interesting! I have had serious problems
with toenail fungus too and it is really miserable. I also have
"pincer nail" on my "big toe" on my left foot and the nail
grows into the skin along with it being really thick and I've
had it removed twice, but it did grow back. I am in pain now
and need to get it removed again because it hurts even without
wearing shoes and it's getting too cold now to wear sandals!
I never heard about the vinegar thing, but I also have the
"ichys". But, I'm pretty sure I will have to go have the nail
removed so I will ask the Podiatrist, although he'll probably
just want to give Meds!

How are you doing, opal? It's good to see you! I don't think I've ever heard of pincer nail but it sound very painful. My doctor told me that the nails wouldn't grow back before he removed them but like I said, I didn't care. I just wanted pain relief. It's not really that noticeable, anyway, since they were on the little toes. These doctors really like to medicate us, don't they? I hope everything works out okay with your toenail.

I didn't know that vinegar was a germicide. I just knew that the website where I got this information said that the fungus doesn't like the acidity of the vinegar. I sometimes spray my toenails with it. I keep some in a spray bottle to spray on my furniture to keep my dog off of it. It's a good idea to spray your nails with it before applying polish.
