Lyrica Update

October 30, 2010 9:18am CST
I recently was asking people about their experiences with Lyrica/Pregablin to treat fibromyalgia and related conditions. After a bit of a battle with the NHS (I was told that Lyrica hasn't been proven enough, even though it seems to be really popular and useful in the States as far as I can tell), I managed to get a hospital prescription for it. I've been started on a relatively low dosage now that will increase gradually, and after a few weeks I'm noticably taking fewer painkillers! This is a bit of a small miracle for me as I've been so debilitated for so long, I didn't think there was light at the end of the tunnel! I really wish the health service would catch up on better treatment for people with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue, as they just seem to throw ineffective painkillers at the problem and hope it goes away.

Personally the problem for me, is finding a Doctor who really wants to listen and understand my pain I deal with. I just read Headaches can also play a part, and I have been having severe headaches, but seeing a Neurologist in about 2 weeks so maybe I should ask some questions. I have been told Lyrica is not good for someone with Diabetes, or problems with Chronic wounds not wanting to heal so this could be a Big issue for me. Just wish Health care in the states could get a little more like it used to be instead of Doctors only be required to help treat only one or two things and then you have to find someone else for everything else.

I hear you. The doctors here have no idea how to treat the condition and so they don't really try. They give you painkillers that don't work and aggravate other symptoms and then send you on your way. If only there was enough funding into what causes it and how to treat it, imagine how many suffers could live healthy and productive lives, contributing to society again. I've been prone to migraines the last couple of years and I think it's fibro related because I never in my life had them before and they can last up to two weeks, on and off when I get an attack now. My triggers are fatigue and too much chocolate.

Perhaps you need to be taking a stronger dose? Or maybe it's not right for you. Sorry to hear that.

I am glad that you are finding some relief. I think the healthcare system does need to be more attentive and treat people by person and reeaction versus typical treatments. Take care.

I think a lot of the time doctors treat the symptoms rather than the problem and in the long run it doesn't help anyone.

I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia as well and it is absolutely terrible. I struggle trying to work 8 hours a day, and I usually end up leaving work some days due to the symptoms. I am also on Lyrica, which I'd have to say does help quite a bit, but nothing totally takes away all the symptoms. You'll still get flareups from time to time. I wish there was something more they could do for this condition, but it probably won't happen in my lifetime.
