Why does money have so much importance in life?

I was reading this Cree proverb that states "Only when the last tree has died, the last river has been poisoned and the last fish caught, will we realize we cannot eat money". Money is not real is just a piece of paper which we choose to give conventional value in order to exchange it for real stuff. My question is why we decide as societies to destroy our environment and our planets future capabilities to sustain life in order to make money now? Environmental costs are often neglected in favor of financial gains...
What are your opinions?
Why does long term planning is no longer considered and we just think about the next quarterly report?

Well, if the last of the lasts have run out, we'll realize for sure that money isn't edible. That's possible to happen but not today. Not in our time. People know this That's why they spend a lot of time earning money and spending money.

Man is fond of money and most of us run after money as all the earthy comforts are available by money only. But I think money is not everything though money is also not nothing. There are somethings like happiness, peace of mind etc which cannot be purchased by money. Thus we should have to earn money for our livelihood but that should not be the only goal in life.

i dont know. thats the government and very rich that think only of money and they are making us a bit of the same with this economy they have destroyed and dont seem to care of what risks and extremes most people will go to in order to eat and survive and feed our children now. 
thats about what i think it boils down to. the rich rule the world and they dont care.
