Well, we all know that having pets at home require much attention and dedication in maintaining their life span to reach long so you'd enjoy their company as much as possible. Neglecting that responsibility would surely shorten the expected life span of any pet for that matter.
Even though I don't have a lot of experience when it comes to pets that you need to take care of in a tank, most of those that I have seen from houses of friends and classmates would have an Arowana. I would get to ask them how old it is as they really look quite big and they would answer that it has been in the family even when they were still young! If that's the case, I would say that these kinds of fishes would really live long as long as you maintain their basic needs.
The tanks that they live in would have filters and they would feed it regularly. They also say that these kinds of fishes bring good luck and with Chinese influence on how you should place them at home, would bring much more luck.
I am not sure though if you would like its appearance as some wouldn't consider them pretty (^_^")

When you talk about long life of a certain fish, well this will depend on you and how good you take care of them. We cannot just say a fish of this kind is longer in life span if we are just neglecting their health and nutrition concerns.
I suggest you asked a friend who can guide you in buying a good tank, ask informations about diseases that a fish can get so you will know that it is important to give them medication and have their water ph balanced by placing an anti chlorine drops or so.
It is tedious to take care so you need basic informations on taking care of your fish. About certain types of fish that can be stable enough, I suggest you buy arowana and flower horn since their lifespan is longer. Gold fishes are good to look at but they are the most messy fishes and they poop a lot so you need to clean your tank every now and then. You can also have a janitor fish or plecos to keep it balance. But never ever buy an aggressive fish and mix them with the tamed ones, it will be a disaster.

I'd recommend you a gold fish (Carasius Auratus). I had one for four years, then I sold him (her?) to a hobby aquarium-keeper, who promised me he was going to breed this fish of mine. My fish has a name (Lucien) and a black Carasius as a friend (Luigi was his name). I had had them for four years, when I was in college. When I finished college and I needed to leave the capital and move in this small town, I had to give up on them, hoping that they will be more happy at that aquarium-keeper.
