Spirulina - How many of us know its benefits?

I've come across the benefits of spirulina long back during 1990s, but I didn't take it as a supplement. (I think it was launched by Himalaya's Ayurvedic company.) I've seen some ads also but after a while there was no advertisement or any promotions. Just recently when I was surfing, I saw that a Charitable Institution are producing spirulina. Then I searched the internet about the benefits and found interesting facts. How many of us are aware of the benefits of spirulina? Do you take spirulina as supplement? (If so, how do you feel?)

Spirulina contains vitamin A and vitamin E, as well as health-enhancing amino acids; significant amounts of the gamma-linoleic acid (GLA), a fatty acid that promotes cardiovascular health; chelated forms of the minerals potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, selenium, phosphorous, and iron; complex sugars, trace elements, and enzymes—all of which are easily absorbed from spirulina by the body. It also contains chlorophyll (green)and phycocyanin (blue) pigments in its cellular structure, which give it a blue-green color, and have been proven to help detoxify the liver.

I have heard the name, but I know nothing about that particular product. I think it sounds interesting though.

Hi Venky, Spirulina as it is sold in India is a concentrated form of Rich Proteins and is a great food supplement for anyone who can digest it. Given the fact that I am weak in digestion and have Ulcerative Colitis, I am not allowed to use it. But when things were healthier, I had consumed one pack of those and it was great and highly energetic. Unfortunately, in India, many are not aware of this and other great supplements we have but the world is making money from these Ayurvedic Extracts. Consider the Aloe Vera too here. Again, these packs in India are too costly and beyond the reach of the common man who might think to use but is forced to retract and rethink before buying as they are quite expensive. They should make smaller packs (if I remember they are currently available in packs of 99 capsules) and also reduce the price for samples that will show the benefits and the consumers would start buying the larger economy ones. Cheers, theSids.

I think there is quite lesser promotions for Spirulina. That's why it didn't reach many people. (The non-affordable price for common Indian is another reason though.) Yeah..currently I've seen packs having more than 60 capsules. The lowest price I've seen for spirulina is INR 240 for 100 capsules. Samples, a good idea, but I wonder why nobody thought of it. When a shampoo can be in a sachet, YES, why not spirulina? Regarding my son taking spirulina, I've referred the literature but there's not enough but "people of any age can consume spirulina". But, you may be right. I've observed that he is not taking enough food as he would previously. We were also thinking that the spirulina might be the reason. Do you have any idea whether taking spirulina with Aloe Vera capsule will help?

Hi Venky, Aloe Vera is another great Natural compound which is great for the digestive system and there are many other benefits like they say it controls hair fall, anti-aging and many other things. Again, a product from Indian Ayurveda - mechanized more by foreign countries. But I doubt if both can be taken together. Both have different reasons and different works. Hope they dont clash. Aloe Vera is currently available from Ramdev Baba's Labs (the local one) in capsule form but the ones from the US and other countries (from Amway and other MLMs) are in Gel form which is supposed to be much better and result oriented... I do not understand why Ramdev Baba's products dont work for Indians... My wife tried his hair fall control oil for many months but there were no results... I think we need to do Yoga too when using his products to get results! Sorry I do not have much knowledge here but I would ask friends and search n Internet and if I find anything useful, I would IM you soon. Cheers, theSids
