What is with all the Bible quotes in the politics thread?

I understand the quotes of presidents past, or historians, or economists. But, what is with answering a political question with, Proverbs 20 dash 19 says .... ? Are those responding that way unable to answer the question on their own? Or, do they think quoting the bible counts as doing a fact check?

isn't there supposed to be a separation of church and state. a politician quoting scripture at me does not endear me to them or their message. I want a politician to be able to come up with their own message based on what is happening in modern day society, not an outdated book.

The US Constitution says nothing about the separation of church and state.the first amendment says, "Congress shall make no laws establishing a religion or prohibiting the excise thereof..."

The separation is outlined in the Establishment Clause of the 1st Amendment.

I quoted the first amendment. establishing is so the government does not create a state religion. nothing says there has to be a complete separation. the government as an establishment has to be secular not the people who run it

Isn't point of religion or spirituality to be a compass to guide the lives of those who choose to follow them? Are atheists allowed to use their guides to make decisions, but people who believe in one book of scripture or anoether supposed to just shut up and sing? You justify using the quotes of past presidents, historians or economists, but then ask if people can't answer questions on their own. Are you really insisting that people only use sources YOU respect in sharing THEIR opinions on a topic? We all have our own views on any given topic, and we base those views on many things. Our own experiences, our education, our up bringing, things we have read, and what we have learned from talking to others. Each of these bring new insights and ideas for us to consider in making our decisions in life. You have every right to decide that scripture has no business in your life, or in processing your opinions. However that right works both ways. You have no more right to tell someone else not to use the Bible as they have to tell you not to quote any liberal politicians because THEY don't respect them. What people are doing is giving your their personal opinions and answering questions sincerely. So what's the problem?

Umm...ladybug..you are assuming the book is fiction. For you it maybe fiction. But to some people it is non-fiction. Once again...a matter of opinion and choice. Wow their is that word again...choice. Tolerance of those that delieve differently than you is another great thing.

I wouldn't quote fiction to answer a non-fiction answer.

My guess is we have some religious zealots on this page who want to force their religious views down every one's throat, like I said just my guess.

Hi there Ladybugmagic, I hadn't really noticed it a lot in the political section but that is probably because I'm not there a whole lot. I know there are some that quote the bible for everything that they don't have a reasonable answer for. It's almost like when they can't think for themselves or come up with a rational answer on their own then they use the bible as their defense. You see it a lot in discussions regarding gay marriage or abortion. I don't know how they manage to factor it into politics. I guess I'd have to see an example.

It is because there is this fairly radical idea that our nation is a "Christan Nation" with out mentioning god. This mostly started with Sarah and the far Right searching for something and they know people won't look up the history for themselves. But if you look back to when our country was founded there is no Under God statement in the Pledge there is no In God We Trust on our money. Just the statement in Latin Of One Many. That is why bible statements are coming into politics because people are believing we are a Christan Nation. Well if we where the American flag would look a lot different more like the British flag because you are supposed to follow an obey your king at least according to the bible.

Conservative Christians pushing Christianity and conservative views all in one bundle? Sure seem to be a lot religion pushing into politics these days. Wasn't that why "we" left England in the first place. It bothers me. Ah well.

Honestly, I had not noticed this as a trend. In fact, I haven't noticed it all, nor have I seen it in any thread I have read through or responded to lately. Can you give me five examples? I don't have time to read through each discussion to find the one where someone must have responded to you with a quote from the Bible.

This was a pointed question, and I will refrain from saying who it was intended for. But, keep your eyes peeled, as you will see them throughout the politics threads, at very bizarre intervals.

I think some folks are convinced that these are the End Times, that Obama is the Antichrist and that everything that is going on in the whole wide world can be explained using biblical prophecy...instead of logical thought. They are encouraged to believe this in order to elevate some other folks to the ranks of saviors.

For some people their religion and their politics go hand in hand. They don't separate the two. They live their life by it so therefore it shapes their whole life which includes their politics and how they vote.
