Do you study self help books at night?

During my last trip to US, my boss gave me a couple of self-help books and asked me to study them everyday at night. Due to lack of time, I hardly make it to 5 pages/day. But, After reading when I go to sleep, I feel more relaxed, calm, quite and peace of mind. Do you guys also do something like that. And does anyone have any explanation like why I get relaxed after reading. Do you think I should increase the no. of pages/day?

Well, not self help books exactly, but lately I have been reading quite a lot of books about personal finance, which also are meant to improve your life I guess. And sometimes I do read them at night, yeah. I think you should not force yourself to read more than you feel comfortable with. What is important with these books I think is to get the meaning and the message in the book, not to rush through it.

No, because sometimes those books bore me to tears. I love ready graphic novels and mythology books before going to bed. I like to dream about exciting things.

First of all Welcome to Mylot dear Paulbankonline ! I am really happy to have such sensible discussion initiated by a young man and especially a new member on this forum.Good indeed! Now at the age of 50 now I don't read any self help books now. I read a lot of them when I was in my twenties and thirties. Yes these books help you alot as these books are the experiences of the respective authors in the relevant fields. They are ready to serve sort of things which you are getting from market. If read carefully and understand them they can be a very good source of inspiration and there can be a good change in your life too ! Now a days I hardly require any such books for two reasons, if I want any thin I simply search it on net and secondly by profession I am a Stud Vet of about 50 year, my job involves and revolve around horses wherein I loo after the technical aspect of the breeding and bringing up the youngsters on the farm. But I need to refer the books pertaining to horses. I have my own library with text books on various technical subjects pertaining to horses like Medicine, surgery, Nutrition,Genetics etc etc.I need to refer these boos on day to day basis as we encounter one or other sort of problems on regular basis with 350 horses in hand to take care of! Thus though these books are not labeled as self help books, but thy are not less than any of these books. These books are as good as 'Bible' foe me as I am saving the lives of many of my horses staying on the farm. Thus in conclusion what all i would like to say is - I was a voracious reader of Self Help books during my twenties and thirties and I don't refer them any more, but I regularly refer my text books which help me in discharging my responsibilities in a better and satisfied manner! Thanks for initiating such an interesting topic! All the best!

Hi Paul, Reading at night? Do you mean after you go to bed? I would never be able to do that now as I am married and my wife cannot sleep if there is any light in the room. Earlier yes, I was a night student and always kept the reading part for the nights. It is all so quiet during the nights and also the day time is for other pleasures isnt it? Playing, hanging out with friends can happen during the day time and not in the night. Now for the later part - Do not try to consume what you cannot digest. Same for books too. If you try over reading you would end up missing out the information after the pages that you can comfortably read. And that would make situations grim. Consider this - After a few days of forced reading you complete the book no doubt but then... when your boss asks - ok Paul, now that you have read that book tell me ...... (based on the book) and you just dont remember a damn thing here...Wont that make the situation bad? So man go at your pace... the world is not going to end soon and you have time... Why not use it the right way. Cheers, theSids.
