Would you prefer buying your own house or just rent?

November 1, 2010 6:31am CST
I have been sharing an apartment with my sister for the lat 14 years now. If I am to compute the total amount I have paid for the rent, it would sum up to the cost of purchasing my own house. Right now I'm exerting all effort to own one. I will still be paying a monthly amortization though but I can call it "mine". What about you?

Purchasing your own house is the best deal since it will be an investment. Renting is an expense forever. You should consider buying your own, at least a lot where you can build your own house.

and if you still dont have enough money you can loan it up, start a build and sell business until you will be able to sustain for your own dream house.

That's a good suggestion. I actually have a lot & it's giving me headache. For one, the subdivision has little development meaning, their marketing arm is not that good that until now very few have built their house. Secondly, real estate tax is causing me pain because it gets higher every year. Thirdly, I cannot just build the type of house that I want because the developer has their deed of restrictions that we need to follow. Lastly, I guess I made the wrong choice, it's very far from the city. sigh...

hi,i prefer rented house only because,i don't want to invest more money at a time.If we calculate interest,it's enough to pay rent to rented house. We can use our capital to some other business purpose.

In most cases, it's better to buy a home than to rent. renting is better only if your renting is very low, or if you plan on moving in a few years, here's a very handy rule of thumb I came up with: just multiply your monthly rent by 240. if you can buy a house for less than that, then buying is usually better in the long-term. There are lots of rent vs. buy calculators on the net but I found most of them confusing, hard to use, or woefully incomplete. so I set out to make the ultimate rent-vs.-buy calculator...

I think your goal to own your home home is a good one. I myself rented for many years. There were two things I didn't like about renting. The first being I didn't enjoy having to always worry about the possibility of moving, and having to find the right place to rent. And second, when something broke down and needed to be repaired, I was always at the Landlords mercy to get it fixed, and get it fixed right. There were times for example, when I had to go without water for several days waiting for the Landlord to fix the pump on the well. Owning your own home is a good idea as long as you can make the mortgage payment, and over time the mortgage payment is cheaper than paying rent. Owning your home is an investment, and if you take care of it, your home will pay for itself and provide a profit to you when you sell it. In the meantime, owning a home is also a responsibility, as you want to be sure to perform maintenance when required. For an example, I had to put a new roof on my home two years after I bought it. That cost a chunk of money to have a new roof put on, but in the long run my home will be in good condition when I sell it, so it was worth doing. You can't go wrong owning your own home as it will always have value, now is a great time with interest rates being as low as I think they will ever be for years to come, just remember to be careful to look over your prospective property by having at the least your new home inspected before you buy, and always remember the three cardinal rules of realestate: location, location, location.

I think apartments have a sense of freedom. I can move whenever I want...so that's what I like about it.

Well me and my wife rented a house for 6 months and the rent was nearly double what we pay on our monthly mortgage payments now. Our mortgage maybe quite a long one but at least we own the house at the end of it. We are glad we managed to get a mortgage because we hated renting and to me its a waste of money because like you said you could of brought a house with the money you've spent on rent. I think its best to buy a house, but it does depend if you plan on living in that area for years or you are likely to want to move like some people.

it is really better to acquire your own home. it is an investment as well. i've been dreaming of getting one for my own. i'd been paying rent since 1997. so if you'll compute that i would have bought my own. but it is so hard to get one in our country. so many paperworks and processes to go through. go on and get one!

Well I have lived in apartments before and I didn't like it at all cause we never really had our privacy. The landlords would always have to come in and check for stuff and it was just crazy. Plus living in a apartment I think is more expensive than getting your own place. We are now living in a mobile home that we bought and my husband and I are loving our peace and quit and privacy so much. So the answer to your question would be that I would rather my own place then a apartment.

I think it's definitely better to own a house than rent it..because if you rent, the paying will never end and sometimes you have to pay water and electricity bill too. I have my own house and land, always have.. but I still have to pay taxes on it..

It's always better to buy instead of rent if you can afford it, as with your own house you'll have a guaranted a roof forever, and is your own space. On the money side, every penny you spend in the rent is lost, you've payed a service, but by buying, all the money you spend over the years to pay the loans comes back in the form of your own property. I want to move to my own house too, either rented or own. My calculations aren't good, I'm still far from my own, but can possibly rent. The cost for the loan is too high for me now, rents are far more accesible.

Well I guess it depends where you live and how well your job pays and how steady your work is. At one time in a blink of a eye I would say it was ten times better to buy then rent but with the economy the way it is and the way the banks keep changing mortgages and everything your probably best to rent and save some money until the economy repairs itself a bit.

Before I bought my own house, I rented a house. I prefer having a house of my own as I could do anything to make my house the way I wish it to. I bought a house of my own years ago and I feel happy to have it. If I had to rent a house, I would have to pay a lot for it because the renting fee has been going up.

Hi, For me, I prefer to have own house rather than rent a house. At least, we can decorate our own house nicely and it is not wasting money. But decorating rented house is just wasting our money. If you were to calculate the rental every month, by accumulating that amount slowly, you can afford to get a simple house by yourself. That is why at last my husband choose to buy our own house rather than rent a house.

people would rather own homes than keep on renting but sadly not everyone can afford to buy one. there's a big difference when you own the house against renting since you can do whatever you want with the former while you won't give a damn on the latter. Not only that, owning a home means you don't have to adhere to what ever the land lord wants you to do or not to do.

As far as I am concerned, at the first , I am so short of money, I think at that time, I will just go out to rent a house there, which can helps me save a lot of money. Then when I find a better job and can afford most of money are available to buy a house. I think I will going to buy a house at that time. Just wish you can own your house soon.Have a nice day!

That's great! I would also like to own a house of my own instead of just renting. It would be more economical in the long run...I don't need a big house, just enough to house my family. :)
