Would you like an office with a window?

with a window comes responsibility - Of windows and responsibilities

Wouldn’t you rather have a window at your workplace? One of the perks of getting a position of responsibility in a company is getting an office with windows, and with a view. At least it is where I work at. Although I have a window in front of my desk, the view isn’t one of the outside surrounding areas. My window looks out to a hallway where the HR offices are. I don’t mind seeing the HR girls walking back and forth in the hallway, but sometimes I wish it looked out to something green like plants and trees. Or something blue like the sky, if it isn’t raining. I’m pretty sure that if it did, it would help out in my productivity. Or at least help my thought processes (specially in coming up with meaningful discussions here in myLot, unlike this one). So, at your place, would you want more responsibility? And get an office with a window in the process? If at where you are, having a window is only achievable if you became a ‘boss’ of something, would you want that position of responsibility? Or would you rather have a windowless-cubicle, meaning no responsibility? Or would you rather have your ‘work’ window look out to your own backyard? If you did have a window, what would it look out to? How would it compare to my HR girls?

Oh, if I lived in an office I would LOVE a window!! Especially to the outside - whether it be the view of a street, grass, or even a highway - I tend to get a little crazy if I don't at least SEE the outdoors for so long. Luckily I just work in stores, and I can actually sneak outside if business is permitting (slow) and sit out there and until I get a customer who comes in, or if I have someone to cover me so I can have a smoke uninterrupted. I love that aspect of things, it almost makes up for the fact that I make barely any money . I love the outdoors. It's so refreshing and relieves stress. Anyway, I don't forsee myself working in an office any time soon, but hypothetically..I would LOVE an office with windows!! Or at least one. But you're right, those are probably reserved for the big bosses.

Why did I say if I "Lived" in an office? I obviously meant "worked" (although I guess if you work enough, you practically do live there). My brain is on backwards today if you cant' tell! Ugh!

Yeah, if you're a bit of a workaholic, then you could actually live in an office. I even see some of my colleagues having a lot of comforts of home under their desks, like food, a microwave, slippers, etc. Considering how hard you work maezee, maybe there is office work ahead of you in the future. Maybe with the right opportunity (and the right money). And hopefully it would have windows too.

Of cours I would want an office with a window. And the view outside our office is spectacular - expansive lawn dotted with ancient trees in the foreground, a few great antiquated structures on the midground, and a view of the metropolitan skyline in the background. But, then again, considering my propensity to daydream, I think this will not be very productive for me. I could stare out the whole day and not notice that the whole day had passed. So, I want, but I shouldn't have one.

Haha! Your response made me laugh gloryacam. I wouldn't admit it publicly (thanks for the anonymity here in myLot), but I think I would also have a problem with daydreaming. I think I also wouldn't notice the day passing if I had a view just as you described. Thanks!

Right. That's what I like about myLot. I can speak my mind without really being paranoid about the people who would look it.

I am a one man show with my own office and bathroom. And I have 2 windows and a half glass door. Outside are flowering beds and coconut trees. If I exit my office and turn left then I am less than five minutes from the ocean. A really beautiful setting at the moment. I don't think that I could bear to be in a room let alone an office without a window as I am a bit claustrophobic

I agree with binggaling, that would be the perfect office cynthiann! I'd also would like something near the ocean and smell the salty air. And I like that there are flowering beds and coconut trees! It's been a while since I last saw a coconut tree. Thankfully our office is not near a major highway though. There are no car fumes to speak of when I sometimes go out for lunch. Thank you both!

I would like to have a window at my office, because I love the scenery of the city, especially at night--with all the city lights. :) However, you're right. Having an office with a "work" window means increase in responsibilities in our office. So I guess I'll settle for my windowless cubicle, because I'm not in the mood for increase in responsibilities at work since you know that I still have other priorities outside of my office work. One day I hope I'll be able to provide myself with a "work" window because I need all the inspiration that I can get, especially when things are really stressful.

OMG! I still remember the lights in the city. And all the 'fun' things to do there. Makes me wish I was there. Specially this coming Christmas, when everything seems to be more fun (as compared to here). All in due time arystine. I know that there is still some responsibilities that you have to get through. Think of this time of your life as just training for the even bigger challenges ahead. I'm pretty sure that you're on your way! Goodluck!

My colleagues and i share a big office with a large window, what's more, the window looks out to our garden :) We take breaks in the garden whenever we feel tired. But that's not all, outside the garden is a highway which is crowed with vehicles all the time. However, it's ok in my city, at least we can still enjoy the garden and the sky, although not so bule. I do want more responsibility, a office with a window looks out to 'green' of my own,and i'm trying. I wish to start my own business and be my boss one day.

There is nothing better, career wise, than being your own boss. And getting to decide how big a window you want, and to whatever view you want outside. I hope you achieve your dream soon. Or at least in the near futuer. Thanks for responding.

It would be great if the window in my office would also let in sunlight. I think that would help in the overall mood with the people around. And may even motivate me to work harder. Thanks HeBuguMa, and welcome to myLot!

sorry bounce....i can't add much here as i am not a working lady..but yes...i can surely imagine your situations and your working conditions...i think its nice to have a window...as all work and no play(here entertainment) makes jack a dull boy but i think green sights will be more refreshing than he HR girls ...but don't know if its more entertaining for you then no probs

Yeah, although I appreciate looking at the HR girls, I would rather see some greenery out the window. It might not offer enough in terms of entertainment, but I'm sure it'll help refresh the mind a lot more. Thanks eshaan.

With regards to this, I think the seat is not up to us to choose because we are just employees. Maybe if you're a boss of your own company, you have the right to choose. For me, I would want a view which overlooks the sea and I can look out whenever I'm feeling stressed.

That would always be the objective I think. That yo become a boss so that you can have your pick on how your office would look like. If it'll have a window or not. And of course it'll be great if you are close to the ocean so your window can overlook a great view. Thanks.

I've actually never relaly had the desire in my life to work in a position where I had a lot of power because I've never been at all fond of office politics. Therefore, if I was to ever have an office with a window, it would have to be a window that looked into my backyard just like the window that I am able to look out right now. I really like the comfort of being in my own home, even if it does mean that we really don't have any money of our own.

You bring up another aspect of being in an office. The office politics. And sometimes this even determines the responsibility you get in the office, and thus whether you get an office with a window or not. If I had a choice, I'd also pick a window that looks out into my own backyard. Thanks.

An office with a window would be such a treat. Being in a room with just four walls to look at would be depressing. A view from the window could always give new perspective on how you feel in your office.
@bounce58 (17387)

And this new perspective could always translate to productivity in office work. Thus the importance of a window. I couldn't even bare to imagine a box of an office with just walls all around and no window. Thanks for the response.

I would like to work by a window. it can expand my thought, and keep me pleasant. But, my current work is in a closed environment, only having fluorescent. Nevertheless, I still try my best to finish my assignment.

i would prefer an office with a window. right now i am a temp. working from business to business. i like my job for the fact, that i can get so much experience under the same employee. can't find that much of anywhere. so when i do work in office like settings. i love to look out the window and just enjoy the day. for me, its so much better, peaceful and just an overall easy going day if you can just enjoy you view. just my opinion. have a good one!

It must be great being a temp, and being able to go from business to business. I'm sure you have favorites in the places that you worked. And maybe these favorites had windows that helped you have an easy going day. Thanks for the response keshia207r.

Yes, so I can refresh my mind. because it's really stressful if you are just surrounded by four walls with no window at all. for me it will drive me crazy.

As much as I wanted to have my own desk and chair, placing a window in the office is much preferrable. Indeed you are right that the best way of obtaining one is on the position where trees or something green or nature outside could be relaxing. It is also better if air let through it freely. I prefer not a kind of window that is too big in an office setting, something that is perfectly right enough. I don't like also the kind of an office setting that is too close as only the clock tells you the time of the day. Its totally okay for me though that windows are facing the HR girls like your case but as much as possible windows are intended to view outside and not inside the building.

Hello torchablazed. I wish I had a choice. I would also like to see some sky through my window, so that at least I would know if it's sunny, or raining, or snowing. But I have no choice. Thanks.

I think everyone enjoys looking out their window, and being able to do it at work only means that much more. i think if having a window view meant becomming a boss, I would probably turn it down, as I only take lead if I have to. I would also bring it to my boss's attention and let him know it is a form of site deprivation. It also makes people more depressed and less motivated, which means less production from workers. look it up sometime. you'll be quite surprised. Then take the info you find to your boss. This should help. I think the best thing to watch outside, is different birds flying onto pretty colored flowers.

Hello ladymetal80. I've been trying to comment to all the responses here, but so far I think yours is the first one which actually refers to the concept I was trying to convey. That there are responsibilities involved in perks such as windows with a view. Thanks for reading through my discussion!

I find a window can be very therapeutic as the staring out into any form of greenery can help with clearing of thoughts. I am working from home and my desk is facing a window, I find that I have to pull the blinds most times as I find myself very distracted by all the cars and passer bys.

In my old job, my desk was close to a window. There were only 4 of us so it was almost like everybody was staring through a window. I remember days were I didn't feel like working, and would just stare at people and cars passing by. I miss those days! Unlike now, where it is always super busy! Thanks.
