Hi mylotters! I have a question regarding time / time zones, what's the meaning of EST, EDT and DST? What are their differences? What are their purposes? When do you apply it? How would I know if I have to apply the daylight saving time?
I had a problem with my work because of those times. Please help me. I tried to search for it but I have been given broad information that is not easy to understand. I hope someone here can explain it in layman's term.

DST - Daylight Saving Time / Summer Time.
Daylight Time is used instead of Standard Time
Ex: Eastern Standard Time == Eastern Daylight Time
USA have 9 standard time zones.
#1- AST (Atlantic Standard Time),
#2- EST (Eastern Standard Time),
#3- CST (Central Standard Time),
#4- MST (Mountain Standard Time),
#5- PST (Pacific Standard Time,
#6- AKST (Alaskan Standard Time),
#7- HST (Hawaiian-Aleutian Standard Time),
#8- SST (Samoa Standard Time) and
#9- ChST (Chamorro Standard Time)
DST begins @ 2 am on the second Sunday in March like for the year 2010 it's March 14. Ends @ 2 am on the first sunday of November, for yr 2010 it's November 7.
Places in:
PST: California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington
MST: Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming
CST: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida-Pensacola, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North and South Dakota, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin
EST: Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Goergia Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North and South Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee-Chatanooga and Knoxville, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia
SST: American Samoa-Pago-pago and Midway Islands- Midway
ChST: Mariana Islands- Guam and North Mariana Islands-Saipan
HST: (HDT) Alaska-Adak, Hawaii
AKST: Alaskka- Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Nome and Unalaska
AKST == PST == MST == CST == EST == AST (1 hour interval)
SST == HST (1 hour interval)
HST == AKST (2 hours interval)
AKST == ChST (13 hours interval)
Examples:
PST is 1 hr late from MST.
Ex: If it's 6 am in Washington then it's 7 am in Arizona
EST is 6 hrs ahead of HST.
Ex: If it's 8 am in Delaware then it's 2 am in Hawaii
AKST is 18 hours late from ChST
Ex: If it's 4 am in Alaska then it's 10 pm in Guam
I think that wraps it up. Sorry this is the best I can explain it to you. I'm not perfectly sure if all I've typed are right though. If there's a mistake, please correct it. I hope it helps you... ^_^
