Did you know your nails can reveal clues to your overall health? A touch of white here, a rosy tinge there, or some rippling or bumps may be a sign of disease in the body. Problems in the liver, lungs, and heart can show up in your nails. Keep reading to learn what secrets your nails might reveal. Pale Nails: Very pale nails are sometimes linked to aging. But they can also be a sign of serious illness, such as: Anemia, Congestive heart failure, Diabetes, Liver disease, Malnutrition White Nails: If the nails are mostly white with darker rims, this can indicate liver problems, such as hepatitis. In this image, you can see the fingers are also jaundiced, another sign of liver trouble. Yellow Nails: One of the most common causes of yellow nails is a fungal infection. As the infection worsens, the nail bed may retract, and nails may thicken and crumble. In rare cases, yellow nails can indicate a more serious condition such as severe thyroid disease or psoriasis Bluish Nails: Nails with a bluish tint can mean the body isn’t getting enough oxygen. This could indicate an infection in the lungs, such as pneumonia. Rippled Nails: If the nail surface is rippled or pitted, this may be an early sign of psoriasis or inflammatory arthritis. Psoriasis is a skin condition that starts in the nails 10% of the time. Cracked or Split Nails: Dry, brittle nails that frequently crack or split have been linked to thyroid disease. Cracking or splitting combined with a yellowish hue is more likely due to a fungal infection Puffy Nail Fold: If the skin around the nail appears red and puffy, this is known as inflammation of the nail fold. It may be the result of lupus or another connective tissue disorder. Dark Lines beneath the Nail: Dark lines beneath the nail should be investigated as soon as possible. They are sometimes caused by melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer. Gnawed Nails: Biting your nails may be nothing more than an old habit, but in some cases it’s a sign of persistent anxiety that could benefit from treatment. Nail biting or picking has also been linked to obsessive-compulsive disorder. If you can’t stop, it’s worth discussing with your doctor. But remember, nails Are Only Part of the Puzzle Do you bite nails? To which category your nail falls? How frequently you trim them? I don’t bite nails, trim them every week. The middle finger nail of my left hand is slightly cracked, but I don’t have any problem, I make it smooth using a safety razor blade usually. HAPPY DIWALI Professor

Hello Sir, Thank you very much for the informative post. I have read that nails can tell if the people have any health problem but I didn’t know this much you provided in your post. I don’t have the habit of biting nails. I too trim the same once in a week. My elder son bites his nails especially when he watches TV. I am trying my best to avoid this habit on him.

hello Prof, Yes,i've read this from some website that discuss about health. And thanks for posting it here. One more sign is bluish nails that indicates some heart problem. My cousin know if he's having a silent heart attack when his nails turns bluish in color. By then he knows what to do also. It is good to know some signs of our own illness in order for us to be aware of what to do next. Thanks for this good information dear bhai. have a good day always

Is this base on scientific study, my friend. If this testified by doctors that nails can show health problems no need for them to use x-ray or any device to trace the disease

Thank you, professor for this very interesting discussion. I always knew that fingernails were a window to what was going on inside your body, but you have taken the time to break it down to what colors indicate what diseases, etc. Very interesting....I'm happy to report that my nails and I are healthy!

Hello Professor2010, Nails are indeed an indicator of our health too. It is best, discussed when pictures are shown. We learned much from the discussion, and sure we do trim our nails every time when I feel its too long already, and I prefer to not polish my nails for these are indicator of our health. If it is polished, it is difficult for the health care professionals to determine whether we are cyanotic or not. Although there are also other parts of our body that may be a health indicator. Our mouth, eyes specifically the conjunctiva and other soft membranes in our body parts. I'm glad that we have good nails and we will continue taking care of our nails as well our health. Have a great day!

I would certainly follow these discussions. I live reading things about health. I never have found that we can indicate out health from our nails. I'm very careful when it comes to nails though. Me and my kid cut our nails together.

I know that it is quite sad for me to admit that I bite my nails, but I've been a nail biter since I was a very young girl. For the most part I've cut down on this habit, but I think that it is a nasty habit that I will never be able to completely break. However, other than the fact that I am a nail biter, my nails are in generally health and good shape and that is something that I am proud of, I never feel like I have to cover them up.

I have ridges, linked to the skin condition I have. I dont mind too much because my nails are really strong and I can buff the ridges out if I really want to. I never bite my nails, even if I split one, it's just too horrible!

It is good that you have done some research and share the information here. I am trying to see the color or the condition of my nails to see whether I have any hidden sickness. Looks like my nails are healthy and doesn't indicate anything serious with my health. Or maybe my weekly manicure has given me healthy nails that could not magnify any health issue.
