Is there such things as snake repellent?

This afternoon, I took my dog (a little maltese) out to do her business. And since she has been stuck in the house all day, she was running around all crazy outside. When she ran near our bushes of flowers and little shrubbery, there was this snake there! It was more than a foot long and kind of skinny. I don't think it is poisonous but I just don't like the idea of having snakes around the house. I don't want to kill the snake, since it hasn't done anything to me, so what can I do to keep my yard snake-free? Are there such things as snake repellent or something? I know there are certain plants rabbits don't like to come near, are there plants that have the same effects on snakes?
