We are quickly rolling up on the holiday season and that means family, friends, gifts, and most importantly FOOD. Yes the holidays are meant for family and togetherness, but the biggest question at most get togethers is, "What's for dinner?"
Last year was my first time hosting any kind of holiday dinner, and I was frantic! I had only fifteen people on the guest list, yet I made enough food for at least half of the military. I even went as far as renting another fridge to store food in because mine ran out of room in mine two days before Thanksgiving! I was stocked full of pies, cheesecakes, pastries, and every side dish you could imagine. I had a ten pound ham in the oven when the unthinkable happened. The basement flooded.
The water got sop high it extinguished the pilot to the hot water tank. The pilot light had a sensor on it, and when that was activated it shut off all the gas to the house. My oven was gas. Every place that I called, including my landlord, was unreachable or closed, and would be the following day as well due to Thanksgiving. I thought I was going to die.
Early afternoon rolls around; I haven't slept, and my guests have started to arrive. I set out my appetizers and beverages, and went along like nothing was a miss. As soon as everyone had arrived I decided to break the news. I had expected them to get up and go home. They were silent except for the children, so I ran back into the kitchen to compose myself. When I returned from the kitchen I seen that all but my mother had left. I sat in a chair and wept.
The fact that I had expected them to leave didn't seem to soften the blow of them actually leaving. I had failed, and it was obvious. My mother tried to console me, but it seemed pointless. After about an hour I began cleaning up and then was startled by a knock at the door. It was all my guests with shopping bags in hand.
"Who says you need turkey on Thanksgiving?" asked my sister as everyone piled in and began emptying their bags on the dining room table. There was every kind of entree you could think of. Some of them choose to get food that could be made in the microwave, for the others we grilled outside in the three feet of snow. The food and the holiday pulled us together. It was the best family holiday I have ever had thus far.
Now I would like to ask you for your favorite holiday experience you would like to share. What made is special?
