Well it's new to me - bought them in my local supermarket
KIWI BERRIES
They are around the size of a grape and are a small variety of kiwi fruit that have a smooth, edible skin. They are really like a very sweet gooseberry with a taste of kiwi but with a fuzz-free skin.
They are very nice - lovely in a fresh berry salad with some natural yoghurt - if you see them do try them!
Has anyone come across these already and I'm just way behind the times?

I've never heard of them. Sounds interesting.... I bet if we did have them as they'd be considered probably more novelty or specialty that they'd command a high price for them I'm sure. My kids & I do like kiwi I bet they'd go crazy over them.
THough if I may ask are the seeds like the regular ones? you know you chew too many and you get that funky feeling on your tongue?

They don't have any seeds and you still get that kiwi burst of flavour.
I'll just go and find my receipt for price - don't go anywhere- after a dig through my bin I can't find it, but hubby thinks they were £2 something(very helpful) it was him who bough them!
They were expensive as it was only a small punnet but very nice.

I'm trying to figure out what a small punnet would equate to in USA standards. Though honestly I'm thinking it's probably in one of the smaller containers they sell berries in, not that I can even think of the sizing on them if they go by ounces or pint or ?? *LOL* Brain fart I guess since berry season is beyond over. But if that was about $2 I would say not too shabby. I think we pay more for raspberries of similar size container or smaller (from what I can guess form your pic) if on sale.
So if they don't have seeds they must be some crossbred plant that is produced from clippings and grafts then. Glad I wouldn't have to worry bout that funky feeling from crushing regular kiwi seeds in your mouth.

Oh, heck yeah, I've come across them... in my own garden!
I'm growing them here. I have both green and purple kiwi vines. The green I planted 3 years ago and it produced a few of those tiny kiwis this year. The purple vines I just bought this year so it will be awhile before they produce any fruit.
These tiny kiwis can handle colder temperatures than the traditional, fuzzy kiwi fruit. They grow like CRAZY, too. I have the green ones growing over an arbor and the purple ones are growing along a fence.
I was very worried that they would die this summer because of the extreme drought and high temperatures but they made it, although they did lose a lot of leaves. I'm sure they'll be back in their glory next Spring.

You know, I've never seen these fruit in any shops around here but you can order the vines from just about every nursery in the US. I'm not sure how far south they'll grow well, since they handle cold temperatures while the traditional kiwi plants need warmer climates but they're growing just fine here, bigger and faster than I would have imagined! I'm a bit concerned that they're going to take over my garden one day. LOL I'll just start trimming them back if that happens.
I have the feeling they'd grow where you live, too. Have you tried looking for them in any online or mail order nursery? You need a male and a female vine for fruit but one female vine produces a LOT of fruit... a lot cheaper than buying them in a store. That was my main purpose for growing them here. I have the room and I'm cheap, so...

I have never seen them let alone even heard of them. I am not a big fan of kiwi, so I am not sure if I would like them, but I certainly would give them a try. We do have an grocery store down in Atlanta (about 1 hours away) and they have a lot of unusual fruits and vegetables, so they may carry them. The next time I get down there I will definitely have to check them out. My daughter loves kiwi so she would probably enjoy kiwi berries.

Mmm. Never tried these. Since we both like Kiwi, we will give these a try. With that thought in mind, how about a kiwi berry pavlova?
