Picking Apart the Movie

Whenever I see a movie that was a book first (and I read the book) I totally pick apart the movie. Recently, I watched "The Time Traveler's Wife", and my parents thought it was really good, but they HADN'T READ THE BOOK! I sat through the whole movie comparing it to the book. In my opinion, the book was ten times better. There was so much more depth, and the movie just seemed rushed, leaving way too many things out. I have felt like this with many other movies that were books first too. I can't stop comparing! But I'm not always one the books' side. I thought the movies "P.S I Love You", and "The Notebook" were better than the books, but it's usually rare for me to think that. Do you find yourself sighing and shaking your head through a movie that was a really good book?

I agree that accurate presentation and predictability is important if the film is an adaption from a novel or based on true events because there are bound to be comparison between the original works and the film. I remembered once I watch a drama serial that was adapted from a novel and I was too excited to find out the ending only to realize that the storyline was changed where the original pair of lovers (who ended up together in the original works) was separated in the film adaption. Fans of the original works were heartbroken while I felt that "sighing and shaking my head" when I watch how the story development went (and ended).

What we should remember about books that are made into movies is that books and movies are totally different art forms. This kinda also means that there must be about a million ways to make a movie out of one single book. I do get you though. There are some movies are greater than their original book version, and we love the books we read and can't help but feel disappointed when a movie version falls short. I nit pick movies too. I analyze almost every single aspect of the film be it the acting, the shots, the shot compositions, the writing, everything. I like to engage my entire mind when I watch a movie. It keeps me active and I enjoy watching films this way. I studied literature in college and my background from this makes me watch films this way.

I feel as though if producers are going to take a book and adapt it into a movie they need to stay true to form. When I read My Sister's Keeper I was touched throughout the entire thing. I could relate to the characters, it felt more personal and you understood the characters so much! The last page made me bawl like a little baby and when I found out that it was being made into a movie I was thrilled. Since I loved the book so much I figured the movie would be just as wonderful. Sure, it was a sad book, but it also creates this sense that you should never take a family member for granted and that no matter what your family is always going to be your family. Anyways, when I saw the movie I was slightly disappointed. At the time my best friend's sister was going through chemo, so the reaction was still a little strong but it wasn't as strong as the book. I thought the movie was thrown together and they changed so much of it you didn't get the true effect that the book gave you. I am curious about The Time Traveler's Wife because I absolutely loved the movie and usually the book is better. That book is definitely on my list :)
