What do you do to stay awake while driving?

After going through some dangerous near accidents I found something that works wonderfully for me. I munch on cornflakes! The crunching keeps me wide awake and alert! What keeps you awake? Have you had any accidents or near misses from falling asleep while driving? Thank the Lord I only hit a wall once, the other times I woke up in time to avoid killing myself and any body else. I know a few people that were not so lucky.

I don't like driving too but sometimes you don't have a choice. I just had a vision of someone singing at the top of their voice and falling asleep with their mouth wide open! (just joking) I think that would happen to me.

Good question. I read, sometimes until 2am and then have to be up at 4am to go to work. I know that I should just put down the book and go to sleep but when its a good gripping story I have no will power at all. So now you know! I am a wimp when it comes to a good book!

Eating proves to make you stay awake in general. I've never been into an accident nor a near accident in my life while driving. Keeping my eyes on the road is tense enough to keep me awake. It's been like this since i started driving. I hope it stays.

Lucky you. I am glad that you have never had an accident. Its really nerve racking, shocking and can shake you up. I hope you can keep that up too.

If i am driving and feeling sleepy with a companion in the vehicle, i strike up a conversation with them to keep me more alert. If i am alone, I will listen to some music. The music would have to be upbeat and full of energy. Otherwise, it might put me to sleep instead.

I once fell asleep beside a huge boom box. Music doesn't keep me awake, unless I am lying in bed and them it keeps me awake! Talking keeps me awake until the person falls asleep and I am right back to keeping myself awake!

Welcome to mylot
I normally don't drive at night and avoid long drives, my son is always with me, when we go on long journey of say 500 kilometers, to avoid sleepy feeling we keep talking, stop on road side tea stalls, take only tea or coffee..
Thank you so much for this discussion.
HAPPY MYLOTTING
Professor. . Cheers have a lucky day ahead.

Thanks for the welcome. I no longer drive at night, I can't see a thing. The lights blind me and if there is another vehicle behind that one I'm done. Thanks for the advice.

Thank you for asking this.Actually,I do had a terrible experienced about driving under the influence of drowsiness.Let me share this to you when I was driving in a 17 kilometer drive without sleeping for almost 18 hours.I cannot control my mind when I am really feel sleepy even though I tend to open my eyes. Then I only realized that I was already in the hospital for almost 1 week.I done asking anyone from my peers a year later from my recovery about how can I fight being drowsy or sleepy ahead while driving. My friend suggested that I have to chew a corn chips.Similarly to your story, that is it.

You are saying that you fell asleep and spent a week in hospital? Wow! I am glad that you made it! I have seen the results of some really terrible accidents and if you make it through one alive you really have to thank God. Corn chips or corn flakes, they do work well don't they? Well I am glad that you found a solution and wont go through falling asleep again while driving. The best thing that we really need to do is get enough sleep! Go to bed early enough! That is what I need to learn to do. I find all kinds of things to do but then sometimes I read instead of going to bed. I need to learn is will power, how to put down the book, no matter how interesting it is.

Having the windows open works for me ... Feeling the wind on my face keeps me wide awake .

I have heard that that helps some people but not me unfortunately. Thanks for your input.

I do get sleepy some times while driving, especially on those days when I didn't get enough sleep. Two things I do to keep me awake. Listening to the music stations on the radio. The other way is listening to my favorite music CDs. I keep a stack of CDs in the car for that purpose. That certainly helps a lot to stay awake.

Sorry, but music puts me to sleep. I definitely couldn't use your method. Some people say they stop and have a drink of rum, another man said that he keeps a bottle of water in the car and stops and washes his face. I wash my face before I go to bed! That definitely wouldn't work! and as to the rum! that would have me in lala land in a blink of an eye, literally.

Thanks for your responses! I know what you mean about being tense while driving. Some of the drivers are so bad you have to have eyes in the back of your head. A relative of mine was rearended and the lady said that she was driving too slow so she ran into her back to get to drive faster. can you believe it!

When I want to sleep nothing keeps me awake unless its something that I am actively doing and driving isn't active enough.

When the windows are down and the wind brushes my face, that keeps me wide awake. I like the feeling of flight and the wind hitting my face. I am wide, wide awake this way. However, when the windows are closed and the aircon is on, I have the tendency to feel sleepy,so I try to chat with whoever I am with.

That doesn't help me at all. Talking to someone does, but most of the time that I have someone with me they fall asleep and I am right back to square one.

I've never been involved in a car accident because of being sleepy.
When I feel like falling asleep, I pull over and get out of the car, make some exercises - stretch my muscles, take deep breath and so on. After 5 minutes I'm as good as new.
Sometimes I also try the loud singing method, but I do this only if I am alone in the car, because I'm a lousy singer and I don't want anybody to hear me singing (Oh, well, except for my dog).
Here are some other tips to stay awake while driving (it seems that many people have the same problem) :

Thanks for the tips. Sometimes its not safe to stop when you start to feel sleepy. I tried singing but its not as effective for me as the cornflakes is. something sour is also effective.

A good "method" for staying awake while driving is to open one of the side windows (or all of them, if the car is equipped with eletric ones). If outside is cold, then I guarantee you that you will not sleep until your final destination :-)
But anyways, don't drive when you are exhausted!

I suppose cold would help but my country doesn't get cold. Thank God! I fall asleep because I don't get to bed early enough to get a good nights sleep. I know that's what the problem is but I still need to be able to stay awake!
