how many icons do you have in your desktop (except the my computer and recycle bin)?
do you use all of it? or do you put it there just for display?
I came up with this discussion because I saw a strange's laptop in an internet cafe... and all i see in his desktop are icons. Full of icons covering up the whole screen!!!
don't he get confused seeing those little things in his desktop?
I have only 5 icons in my desktop. some usual applications i use weekly... the most common applications i use everyday is in the taskbar. Which i only click once to open up...
How about you?

In my sister's computer there are lots of icons too..the screen was almost full with it. They were not applications though, they were documents and pictures.. I only have like 31 icons, but I only use more or less 8 of them ..I just keep them there because I think I may use them someday...I hope that day will come.

well, its up to you then. 31 is too many for me. it depends on our preference of course... it's our computer and we can do anything we want with it.

Yes, you're right we can do anything we want with our computer..Although I think it's bad to put too much icons in our desktop- one reason is it becomes confusing, and I heard someone say that it might slow down the computer..

i agree that these icons can slow down the computer especially during start up. Also quick launch icons could slow down opening your computer.
it is better to put only very important icons in the desktop, as well to use small file size desktop wallpaper to smoothly load up your PC.

I always keep the icons on desktop to the minimum posible. Right now, I have My computer, network, internet explorer, and a very few programs that I use frequently.
I remove icons as soon as an installer drops it on the desktop. I've deleted many of them that way, even the recycle bin, my documents, and a few times IE.
I place them on the left side and keep them sorted. I also use the desktop for some temporary storage, for example after downloading a file or to pack it to a RAR before emailing it, or something. Those icons stay scattered in the screen a few hours at most an then I delete them for cleanness.

i also place temporary files on my desktop then delete it if i am not using it anymore. i have my recycle bin at the lowest right corner of my screen alone. applications on the top and some important folders from my work on the left corners.
that is how i organize my desktop. =p

My computer is kind a complicated so i don't have a lot of icons on the desktop. Now i have around sixteen icons on the desktop and i use around ten of them daily.I love to show my screen saver, so i would put a lot of icons on the desktop.
But i have a friend an her desktop is full of icons ,but am not sure if she use them all in a day.

i always try to keep my desktop clean. i put my shortcuts in my quick launch or task bar. desktop icons can slow down your pc (read it somewhere). i don't know if it's true but there's no harm in trying. :) but when i'm doing something, i save my files in my desktop and then move it into somewhere safe after i finish it.

I have got a lot of unused icons on my desktop. While majority of them are really unused, but i'm having them there just for the sake of not making my desktop look so empty. Other than that, i have got 3 different types of browser icon on my desktop too. I like my desktop to be neat, but at the same time looks full. I don't organize it in the usual way, i used them as stars in the sky because of my background.

cool! i sometimes do my icons for styling my desktop too. i also feel that 2 icons makes your desktop so bare, just like you said. i can live with 3-8 icons. but maybe not more than that. =p

There was a time when I had a countless number of icons on my desktop and I decided that I just had to clean up the mess so to speak! I created to folders, one on the right hand side and one on the left and I stuck everything in these two folders and now there is virtually nothing on my desktop except the lovely picture I have chosen for my background!
When you are installing software you tend to get these shortcut icons and in time your whole desktop can be inundated with icons! Anyway, it's nicer when there's a lot more space on your desktop. Andrew
