I went to an open house last night at a jewelry store here in town and I'm very glad I did! The main reason for this open house was for people to buy gifts for Christmas as well as for themselves and just for everybody to know what they had. They had some beautiful jewelry! They also had or'dherves and drinks, nonalcoholic as well as alcoholic. I'm glad they did have nonalcoholic drinks because I don't drink alcohol at all since I'm a chrsitian. Anyway, they gave away door prizes about every fifteen minutes I think it was and I won one! It was a beautiful, silver bread tray! This was the first time this particular jewelry store had ever had an open house. I have won a few door prizes in my life but not very many. Have you ever won a door prize? Share!

A door prize is a gift that is given by the hostess for those who come. The door prize can be given many ways. At our church when we have a mother daughter banquet a sticker is placed under the bottom of so many chairs and who ever sits in that chair gets a gift. We use to have Direct Selling parties (Tupperware, Stanley, Watkins) and the dealer would have some one draw from the orders placed and who ever was drawn would receive a gift. In this case, the store owner had names placed in a bucket or bowl and every so often a name was drawn and that person received a gift. Hope this helps you understand.

Thank you for explaining this, Christmas2006. I knew what a door prize was but I thought I might have trouble explaining it, as I'm not too good at explaining things, lol! According to wikipedia.org, a door prize is a prize awarded at a party or a gathering to one or more persons attending via a raffle or drawing. Prizes can be small things such as pens, bookmarks, and buttons or they can be larger, more expensive items like gift baskets, cash, tickets to concerts, or furniture.

Hi Kathy! Congratulations and good for you! You go girlfriend!
That's a great gift you got yourself there. Nice going. I have
to say I have never won anything ever and it is really upsetting.
But, I am so very happy for you because you are a great person
and really deserve it! Use that tray and enjoy it~

You know Kathy, that sounds like a great idea to decorate the
tray for the holidays. I wouldn't have thought of that! Using
different colored napkins and stuff would be a great idea to
put out some cookies for Thanksgiving and Christmas! I think
you are going to get alot of use out of that tray!

Thank you, Leslie! You're so sweet to say these things! I plan to use this tray a lot and one of the employees told me how I can decorate it for the holidays. I hadn't thought about these things but they were good ideas and I love to be creative, anyway. She said I could use different color napkins for different holidays. We have a potluck supper once a month at church all the time and I plan to use it for these occasions. Believe it or not, I hardly ever win anything and it was a shock to me when I won this, lol! The last time I remember winning a door prize was back in the 70s when I was selling Avon. We used to have meetings for the Avon Representatives once a month and they would give away door prizes at these meetings. Just hang in there! You'll win something one of these days!

I don't think I've ever heard of build a bear but that sounds like a lot of fun. We do have a few toy stores here in town, though. We did have Toys R Us in the mall but they went out of business. I bet your daughter was really excited to get that prize package! Actually, it was a bread basket that I won rather than a bread tray. We had our Thanksgiving Potluck at church last night and I got a chance to bake some rolls and use my bread basket. Thank you for responding.

Good morning..Kath! I do NOT win..EVER! So a great big congratulations is in order to you! I am like your token loser...keep me around and it's a guarantee you will win! Seems like a nice way for this store to create traffic..especially with the economy in such a downturn. And "kudos" to you for venturing out to this event. Take care..and Cheers!

So I just wonder what are you having an open house usually for???

Hi zhpshql! It's good to hear from you! I'm doing fine. Thank you for asking. I didn't have the open house. The jewelry store I went to had it. As I said in my discussion, this was the first time for this particular store to have an open house. The open house was for people to see what they had for Christmas gifts or they could just purchase something for themselves. Several people tried on different pieces of jewelry. I tried on a ring but I didn't buy it because it was too expensive! Yes, it's pretty much like a party but you don't take a present and it's totally free. According to wikipedia.org, a door prize is a prize that is awarded to one or more persons attending a party or gathering via a raffle or drawing. Prizes can be small things such as pens, bookmarks, and buttons. They can also be larger, more expensive items like gift baskets, cash, tickets to concerts, or furniture. I knew all the time what an open house was but I wasn't sure if I could explain it very well, as I've always had trouble explaining things, so I went to wikipedia.

As I've been saying, it's very rare for me to win anything, lol! I just keep on trying, though. The only other time I can remember winning a door prize was back in the 70s when I was selling Avon. Our district manager used to hold meetings for the representatives every month and she would give away door prizes all the time. I won a terra cotta bird, which is still on my dresser! I've been to a few open houses in my life. Just hang in there! You'll win a door prize one of these days.

That's so cool! I don't drink either (also a Christian). I haven't ever won a door prize, but my mom has. I remember it well because it was a door prize I wish I had won! It was a long time ago, so I don't remember what store the gift certificate was from. But I remember it was worth $50. It's always exciting to win something.

Thank you, AmbiePam! Yes, it's always nice to win something. We're having our Thanksgiving Potluck Supper after church tomorrow night and I plan to use it then. One of the employees of the store told me how I could decorate it for the holidays using festive napkins. I like to be creative and I'm glad she told me about this. Just hang in there! You will win something one of these days!

Thank you. What it was, they (the employees of the store) had us to register for a free prize when we first got there. I don't always win, believe it or not. The last time I remember winning a door prize was back in the 70s. I was selling Avon back then and they used to give away door prizes at the Avon meetings. Just hang in there. You'll win something one of these days.

HI, I am glad you won the bread tray!
I haven't won anything really, but I did win a $50.00 prize for sitting in the "hot seat" at the casino a couple of weeks ago :) Gambled it all away too :) won a little, lost some, but had a great time doing it !!

Actually, it was a bread basket I won. That's probably what I should have called it. I don't guess it makes any difference, though. I don't gamble, myself, since I'm a christian. Congratulations on your win, anyway. There has been a lot of talk for a long time about having a state lottery in Alabama. However, our new governor, which I voted for on November the 2nd is against having a lottery and I'm so happy he won. Just hang in there! You'll win a door prize one of these days!
