Hi ivansama! The Bible is very honest and candid in recording the good, the bad and the ugly actions of mankind and individuals. If it was all rosy then we would know it was doctored and it would be an unreliable guide and we would know it was the work of man. The Bible presents itself as the word of God and it's honesty testifies to that because we know what man whether he claims to be a believer or a non-believer can do. The religious have shed much blood but the non-religious have shed as much if not more blood (communist regimes, Cambodia). If we try to stay honest and fair the Bible will come to show that it is truly the word of God who is just and records all the facts and doesn't hide anything.
I view myself as an honest person that will assess all accounts with fairness. Give me one example of what you are presenting and I promise to analyze it as fair as possible and see what we can learn from it. I know that God is a God of justice but there are great issues at stake and the future of the universe in the balance. I know that the temporary toleration of evil will set the record straight for the future. A little pain will be worth it for all that mankind will gain for eternity.
I wish you well!

But a lot of the Awful things in the bible were done by god.
Also what with the witch hunts and nazis l'm pretty sure the religious people have shed way more blood.
And l'll just keep the examples to Genesis and Exodus for now. starting with the one that disturbed me the most. Lot and his daughters.

Let's try to be fair here. His daughters got him drunk. Why? Obviously they knew that he wasn't going to willingly do such an action. Also, righteous doesn't mean perfect because if that was the case there would be no righteous people.
God has intervened only a few times into man's affairs. He has let man express his right to free will to it's limit. When in the near future God does intervene, the record will be clear about the fact that man cannot be allowed to use is free will without restrictions and boundaries ever again. Our self-determination has led us to the brink of destroying the earth and all life on it.
In the near future we will yet see unimaginable atrocities and we will welcome God intervening instead of feeling that He has no right and should leave us be.
"after all any laws against incest are kind of irrelevant if you force people to do it twice." I'm not clear here. Who forced who?

The bible is the story of man. Take a look around. Man does some pretty messed up stuff all the time. The book is considered to be holy because its writing is said to be inspired by God. Did God make it all up? No, it all really happened (it's proven to be the most historically accurate book) but God's hand ensured that what happened was recorded correctly and added in some prophecy of what would and still will happen later.

We have to seek, study and understand which are good and which are evil. Apply on our daily lives from what we have learned the knowledge of Wisdom in the Bible, which are only good to God, to us and to others.

It's just to show us that there is indeed nothing new under the sun. The Bible would not be a book of truth if it had attempted to record just the good and clean things, evil and sin do exist, have been around from creation.

The Bible says that He created both good and evil, light and dark, night and day. Life is about balance and who really knows the mind of God? There are many explanations but some things are still a mystery, "For now we look through a glass darkly"

You said "incest". Do you know what's the meaning of that word? Can you cite here an specific verse or chapter in the Bible that encourage "incest"? That's a serious accusation. Can you support your accusation? Can you back it up?

In the case of Noah, there was no incest. Prior to the flood, Noah's sons have their own wives and families already. In the case of Lot's children, there were already other people existing with them. The only case that you can accuse incest (which we can consider not an incest) was in the case of the children of Adam and Eve.

During the days of Adam and Eve, there were no other people but the children of them. If the children will not marry each other, then where will they get a partner? Will they get a monkey or a dog to mate so they can multiply? Of course not! The Lord commanded them to go forth and multiply, but they were not instructed to take yourself a monkey and multiply with it.
The law forbidding the marriage between close relatives was not given until the time of Moses (see Leviticus Chapter 18 to 20). Provided marriage was one man to one woman for life (based on Genesis 1 and 2), there was no disobedience to God's law originally when close relatives (even brothers and sisters) married each other.
Also remember that Abraham married his half-sister (Genesis 20:12). God blessed this union to produce the Hebrew people through Isaac and Jacob. It was not until some 400 years later that God gave Moses laws that forbade such marriages.

Here is my account about your topic.. bible is the story of God's people, you believe it or not, they are happened in their times. What are the reasons and purpose why it happened like cruelty, incest, sacrificies? Those things happened because of a sinful nature of men, it was allowed by God in order to see the might power of God, in order longing people to God. But those events happened under the purpose, will and pleased of God.... in order to push the people of God for repentance.... see you around

The Bible tells the truth about mankind. If we would look at the truth today, it would be just as sordid, if not more. Sick, twisted, cruel, incestuous, lying, promiscuous, infant murdering, corrupt, without natural love or sympathy... But God still cares about us. That's amazing.

This world is corrupt with man's sin and that's why it's in such a mess. If it would have stayed the way God made it, none of those things would have happened. Of course, you wouldn't be here, either, to argue against something you apparently haven't studied well.

Hi ivansama, It's the way life was back than, such terrible things were done all the time. Most of these stories of course were passed down by word of mouth for so long that it's doubtful that there is much truth there, but such things did happen. In the story of Abraham going to sacrifice his son Isaac, for example, this was a common occurrence among the people with whom he lived. The old testament of course is full of such sick and twisted things, but we must remember that it was the way that most people thought at that period in history. Blessings.

These stories are given so that the people who show their abhorrence also must detest from indulging in them. You must read the whole thing and then believe in everything that is written to know the truth.
