Do You Like Art? Any Pictures On Your Walls?

"60 Minute Makeover" on television has been featuring artworks this week which prompted this discussion. Artwork in this house (if you can call it that) has been inherited by my husband. I reckon it was in his Grannie's house originally and none of it is to my taste if I'm being honest. Mum has a lot of artwork and photographs on the walls and swaps them around a lot so she doesn't get bored. One of the large, framed photographs is a puma that I think I've mentioned before but I had it originally in a flat I once lived in with "Blobby." The colours in it are neutral so it can go anywhere. It was £60 (including the frame) way back in 1992 so I'm hoping it's worth more now..but I'd never sell it, no way. I love it too much! Mum does too, thankfully! I envy interior designers that just KNOW what to put on the walls. A guy on "60 Minute Makeover" (Scott Waldron), spotted a few, nice pics of dancers in this lady's house that he was doing the makeover for and he managed to add to them, using a couple more of the same theme, if you like. They looked ace and didn't cost the earth either. That's another thing. I find that prints "do it" for me as opposed to originals and canvases, strange as that may sound. Cheaper too! You're stuck with a canvas and you can't frame them whereas with prints the frame can "make" the pic in many ways. My puma at Mum's, for example, has a thin, black frame with non-reflective glass. The mount ensures I can see the name of the photographer who's called Stephen Krausmann..or something like that! So, do you have any artwork on your walls? Does it have to co-ordinate with the room or do you buy the artwork for its own sake, if that makes sense! Or, do you prefer photographs?

I have artwork on my walls. Most of them are original works. I probably have too many on the walls, but I have to keep them save from the cats.

water and ink castle - A work I got at a gallery from a woman who was having to sell her personal collection to pay child support.

It is a style I happen to like to use myself when I feel like painting
various kinds, I've included an example I do have prints, mostly of giraffes... I have a kind of "illness" about giraffes...

What kind of artwork is it? I'd love to know my friend.

Do you know something? Guess what picture I've been looking for in a fairly narrow, portrait size to go in a space by one of the windows in here? Yes, that's right..a GIRAFFE! I've looked at loads on both EasyArt and AllPosters and just can't decide! I like both real photographs of giraffes (preferably in the wild) plus the more cartoony ones as they have some great colours in them. Perhaps you can point me in the right direction because I'm spoilt for choice!

I like the classic art works, and unlike you I would much rather have an original painting than a print. Currently the only thing adorning my walls are originals by me. I didn't have any place to store them, and I do hope someone wants to buy them so I keep them up. lolol! I cannot paint classic themes very well, so my art is basically modern. I wish I could paint realistic looking, but I can't.

Oh wow, you can paint. I'm so impressed. I couldn't even do the "Paint By Numbers" very well lol. At Mum's 2 weeks ago I had a go at drawing one of her cats and Picasso it ain't!

May I ask what you mean by "primitive?" I'm a bit confused (sorry).

We have no art whatsoever on our walls other than little framed moulded feet that were taken of our kids when they were babies. They look real feet protruding from the frame! We only have photographs of ourselves. There are lots of the kids as the have been growing up in different stages and a few of my wife and me. The largest photo that we have is not of the family though. It is a picture taken from sea of a whale jumping out of the water near Byron Bay, an hour south of here. The shape of the whales head is almost identical to the peak of 1000 metre high Mount Warning in the background next to the whale. It is a great photo.

Because it is stuck to my wall and I do not think I would get a good photo of it as with the lighting in here I would have to use a flash and that would reflect off the glass. I may try if you remind me and if I get the chance over the weekend without a flash!

Abstract art has many colours in it and I'm growing to like it a lot more than I did. This comes from looking at Allposters and Easy Art websites that slow my old computer down but I don't care lol.

i love paintings, surreal ones. But most of these kinds, specially if created by a known artist, are priced high. i haven't bought any but if i may buy, i will buy for its, first the message, then i will also consider the colors and the size, then the price. Photographs are good also but i like to have them in smaller sizes and not for walls.

There are some gorgeous paintings with "messages" in them, I think I know what you are getting at my friend. I should imagine you could lose yourself in really good artworks. As far as photographs go I would never buy anything that was photoshopped. I prefer the natural approach as that is how I take photographs..I never mess with them.

Precisely! why would you display something faked? I love that suggestion, i suggest that to others as well.

I don't have any art on any walls within my home, although I do like it. We're in the process of putting some pictures of the family up on the walls in the living room, as at the moment it looks somewhat bare. I'm into actual art though, used to love drawing and at my parents my wife drawn cartoons of famous people which I had placed on my bedroom wall. I haven't yet brought them over here, although at some point I would like too. I'm not really a fan of the 60 minute makeover show. I do watch it but the designers can come up with some nasty designs, I pefer DIY SoS. :)

Mmm, I don't like the manic presenter of DIY SOS, it's the one on the Beeb I take it? Some of the designers on 60MM can inflict their own personalities on designs at times. I think it's all to do with how much information they get from the recipient's friends and family. At times I don't think they've much to go on and they may not have a real clue as to what the rooms should look like. Also, I've not seen a crooked, high wall yet. Our house has walls like that throughout. It would be a BIG job to transform rooms in here!

I very much like art works. Ther are a number of very beautiful paintings and sculptures on the wall in the family room. Most of them I bought in countries I visited on my business trips. It is very interesting the different cultures as reflected on the art works. Some of the art works were quite expensive, and quite unique too.

Wow, I like the sound of the family room my friend. I am trying to imagine all the different works from all the cultures you have experienced. How lovely!

I love art..If I would have my own place a large part of the walls would be filled with them..But I'm still living with my parents so my walls are all white and clean for now. What I'd love to put up on the wall would be paintings, but pictures are also nice or poster of artists and the like.. just the common stuff.

I know what you mean. There is so much to choose from. The internet is marvellous but there is just so much of it to look at. For example, on a site such as EasyArt I could type in giraffe in the search box and LOADS of giraffes appear..it's mind-boggling! I'm also getting into pics with different colours in as well. I did have posters of rock stars on my walls when at home with my parents but as soon as I moved out I got the puma photographic print I mentioned in my discussion. Ironically, it's now at Mum's!

I do enjoy visiting art galleries quite a bit. Although I have to say almost all paintings whether modern and or classic I do enjoy viewing. When it comes to actually purchasing them I favor the modern more.

EasyArt and AllPosters can be quite addicting, I have to say. You can even frame your prints online before purchase lol. My old computer is struggling to keep up! I love art galleries too. London is an amazing place to see famous works, in this country at least. My jaw has dropped on a few occasions!

This is something that i have never had an interest in, i have never been keen on art at all. The only things i have on my wall are portraits of my children
