When you travel by car do you worry if it will break down?

We are in an automotive repair shop right now, waiting for them to find the part we need for our 18 year old car. I did not want to bring this car, we have only had it for a couple of weeks. I am very thankful we did not take the toll road on our way home, we would have been really stranded.

We do shop for many things from junkyards. This was not a part that you would want to try to take off a car at a junk yard. This auto parts store did a good job getting and replacing the part we needed

Oh yeah, sometimes even going into town when our van acts up I worry. I hate not being able to afford newer models, though when they break down, it is less likely my husband can fix it the way they make cars today..

All of our cars are old, and inexpensive, and my hubby does do mechanical stuff. I have had some bad times at times with the cars, even here in town. This was not too bad, it cost money I had not meant to spend, and it took us longer to get home, but it is okay now.

Hi GG! You know, it doesn't matter how old or young a car is, it can break down at any age. My car is just 5 years old and although it didn't break down, two lights came on and come to find out, it was a sensor which was covered under the extended warranty - thank God! My parents have a old car but that darned thing gives them GREAT gas mileage! So I don't knock old cars. If it runs, smile!

Our cars run pretty well, and hubby keeps them up. There are things that you never can foresee and this was one of them. It would have happened no matter which car we drove.

Eeek! I hope for your sake my dear that it's an inexpensive fix! I guess that's why I hear about people renting cars to drive long distances that way they don't have to pay the repairs and they know it should make it to the destination. As I've thought if we ever take a cruise we'd have to rent a car drive it cross country (hubby refuses to fly) drop it off when we get to our destination, take the cruise, rent a car again and drive back home. I hope you get out of there shortly and it doesn't cost you alot. Keep us posted and stay safe the rest of your journey!

We are at home now. We received good service, and I will admit I was wrong about this car. The cause of the problem would have happened no matter what car we drove. We were hit by debris on our way to New Hampshire, and the damage did not show up until we were leaving the state.I think I will start another discussion about it in a bit.

I try not to worry about much if I'm traveling. There are so many more things to worry about, like other drivers, etc. It crosses my mind if I know my car hasn't been maintained, but if I know it's been taken care of, I only worry about the to and from. If I didn't, I wouldn't have a good time once getting there.

The damage to our car was actually caused by something that flew off another car and rolled under ours and causing damage. It would have happened no matter what car we were driving.

My dear old car is 19 years old. It has done me well but then I have kept it up and maintained it well. I used it when I moved over to the little farming community about 30 miles away. Usually when I travel further I rent a car so I don't have to worry about haveing it break down on me.

I know a lot of people rent cars, and we usually have excellent luck with the cars we have. It turns out that someone lost a part off their car on the highway and it hit our car and caused the damage.

I drive an even older car, mine is a 1978. Its a beast, gas hog, but it runs good. I would worry if I had to take it anyplace. I have AAA just in case I have car troubles, its worth the money it cost. As for traveling by car, when I go with me mom, we take her car. Its a newer car and she always has it serviced before we leave. When my hubby and I traveled, if we had an old car, we would rent a car. The money we saved on gas and the worry of breaking down was worth the expense of renting a car. That way we didn't have any worries. We have had car troubles while on the road, being far from home always makes it worse. good luck with getting it fixed and it not costing an arm and a leg.

Sorry to hear about your car GardenGerty. I try not to think about cars or vehicles breaking down, as I have only been in one car that this as happened and I think things often happen when you're worried they will so I try to avoid jinxing things. I know it sounds daft, although I can say for sure if I did think of it would happen as it seems to be the case with most things. Sadly it doesn't work with anything positive which is a shame but I once joked about a lift breaking down at work and it did, also had a dream that I almost got ran over and the following a day a car almost drove into despite being on the side walk. Really I should prove this doesn't really make things come true but I wouldn't want to jinx anything still. Unlucky LOL

Some people believe that this does work with positive thinking as well. Actually, what happened was not our car's fault. I think there is someone out there that is more in trouble than we were. Our car was damaged by a piece of debris that came flying off someone elses car during rush hour on the New York Thruway. No way to dodge it. It hit under our car and damaged some stuff. It showed up when we tried to drive home.

Yes it is something I worry about a lot. Our cars are always used and not in that great of shape to begin with. Though we don't take too many road trips, so we don't have to worry about being far from home. I have broken down a few times, and usually just call hubby from work to come rescue me or something. He's fairly good at fixing minor problems.

Hubby is good with cars, and what appeared to be the problem was not the whole story. The damage we had was caused by something that hit us that came off another car on the New York Thruway. We could not dodge it, and it went under the car. The entire damage did not show up until we hit the road on the way home. I will be putting up another discussion.

has been a concern of mine for many many yrs since we used to travel around all the time and usually had very little money. good thing there was kind people out there and organizations at the time. but i never worried after i got my toyota. even though it was 6 yrs old at the time and its 11yrs old now, that my daughter has it. its never broken down badly and they will run and run forever if you take care with general maintenance

Well when we use our old car I am a little bit worried that it will break down suddenly. But thankfully I have not experienced any serious break downs in my life. But there was a time when one of our convoy of cars break down every an hour or so because of flat tires or overheating and such.

Bad enough that the return home after a trip is gruesome but to be stranded also. UGh... Bet your hubby insisted on taking the car huh... Anyways. My boyfriend drove out to TN to an acting job. So being that I have the larger, newer auto I volunteered him to take mine. But not until he took it in for an oil change as the drive was 9 -10 hours, he kept saying it should be fine and I kept saying; you just never know and anyways it was overdue. He will be out there for two 1/2 months. So I am flying out there, whoot, whoot - the trade for him using my car HA! But in late December we will be driving back with my car. So do you think I was actually thinking of him first. Well a little but I kept thinking my drive back.. But anyways.. So glad that all are safe, sad that you now have the added expenses. But hey life hands us these bumps all the time. Ugh, we could actually live without them though.. Welcome back have not seen you around for a minute.

It could have been a lot worse. I hope the acting job goes well and that you enjoy the change of pace and different scenery. I have been in worse situations. It is good to do as much as you can to be prepared before the trip. The actual story of what happened will come in another discussion, after I respond to everyone here. I have also been unable to access the internet while gone. I have to catch up on stuff.

Yes, hubby makes sure the car is in good shape before we go traveling, and carries tools as well. This was a circumstance we could not have avoided though.

hi garden gerty oh my I hope it does not cost you too much. I am glad too you were not on a toll road. when my husband was alive we often drove out in the California countryside to purchase plants for his landscaping business. we had an old clunker of an International Harvester pick up and invariably it broke down when I was with my husband. The transmission went out and we were stuck there until my hubby could get old of my son who was at work. He had to call a tow truck for us and tow us into Costa Mesa.Even back then the new transmission cost like crazy. but no we never took the pickup on long trips, we just bought round trip Greyhound bus tickets.. I do hope you do not have to pay a whole lot for the missing part. its no fun meing stuck at an automotive repair shop.

I haven't travelled anywhere since 1999. That's when I went to the Choctaw Indian Fair in Philadelphia, Mississippi. I didn't worry about my car breaking down back then because I had just purchased it before I left. It was a used car but I didn't know it at the time that I bought it because I went by myself to get it and I was inexperienced. I guess, in a way, I really didn't make a mistake in buying a used vehicle because my nephew recommends buying a used car that doesn't have much mileage on it. Anyway, I'm glad to know that there is somebody else who owns a car older than mine is. Mine is 14 years old! I've had a lot of problems with it since then! Car trouble seems to be my middle name because I've had problems with just about every car I've ever owned even when they were brand new! I used to go to Birmingham, which is an hour drive from here, whenever I had a doctor appointment over there. I don't drive over there any more since my car's not very dependable. If I do go over there, I have to get somebody to drive me over there, which I hate to do. I mean, I appreciate their help but at the same time, I prefer to do things on my own pretty much. To answer your question, I do worry that my car might car might break down when and if I travel.

I know some people who have no luck with cars except bad luck. We usually have pretty good luck. The thing is, a part came off someone else's car and it tore up the underside of our car. It cost us the expense of a motel room and about three hundred for parts and labor, and an extra meal on the road.

I got tickled at your first sentence up there, lol! I know you're mainly talking about cars but I just happened to think about that segment on "Hee Haw" titled "Gloom, despair, and agony on me". There is a line in there that says, "If it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all", lol. I'm sorry this happened to youall! I know youall were pretty devastated since it cost youall so much. I'm glad youall got it fixed, though.

Hopefully everything works out in the end. I think that breaking down by a car is something that is a fear of everyone. Especially at the worst possible time, in the worst possible place. It is something that is extremely horrifying and it personally scares me. Even in the best circumstances, putting the key in the ignition, and turning it, where it will not stop, can be extremely frustrating. Unfortunately, cars are going to break down when they want to break down. And when they do break down, it is going to be at the worst, most inconvenient time possible. It is pretty frustrating to wait around, to figure out what is wrong and hope that the part that is needed does not eat too much of a big hole in your bank account. Of course, when something goes wrong, that is what always tend to happen, at least for me.

I dont think Id want to travel in an 18 yrs old car. Its probably very good looking but Id be afraid that something like what you're going through now might happen. Im sorry you had to go through this.......might be best to find a nice restaurant and enjoy the food or a drink while your car is being repaired. No need to stress yourself........let the men worry about that LOL

We spent the night at a motel, got sandwiches and then breakfast at a little corner store with a lunch counter. The circumstances that damaged our car would have damaged even a brand new car.

sometimes, especially if where are traveling in the mountain pass. But having AAA, makes me comfortable. They will react pass whenever you have trouble on the road.

Sometimes I worry. I have a 2001 model so I don't worry too much. Maybe you should get roadside assistance for your car. You can set it up with lot's of different wireless cell phone services. Ask your cell phone carrier if they have anything like that.
