Careless salesperson

Yesterday I went to a supermarket to buy some living goods. I bought three tins of potato chips and some cleaning tools. I need to make a simple explanation here of the potato chips: The three tins of potato chips was combined in to a whole and given a discount of RMB 3.40 yuan. Their origin price was RMB 8.00 yuan per tin, so the price of the combination was 8.00*3-3.40=20.60 yuan. I took all things to the salesperson to pay my bill. It was a young girl. She scanned all the bar-code and said 16.60 yuan. I was so amazed by the incredible low price because the three tins of chips were worth 20.6 yuan, so I confirmed the price three times. She seemed to be irrated and said something in a low voice. I didn't hear the whole sentence clearly but the main meaning was there was something wrong with my ears. I'm a bit unhappy, gave here 16.6 yuan and left. After arriving home I checked the receipt and found the problem: Because the three tins chips combination has a discount, so the supermarket gives it a new bar-code on an attached paper. But the girl was so careless that she scaned the bar-code on the tin of the potato chips, it gave the computer the price of one tin of undiscounted chips instead of three tins of discounted chips. That gave the supermarket a finance loss of RMB 12.60 yuan. I was reminded of the man in front of me, he brought a combined discounted goods too, and it seemed that the girl also made that mistake. How much will the supermarket lose through her hand before she get unemployed? So all jobs need carefulness!

HI Qianyun, I am a salesperson and I know how easy it can be to make a mistake while ringing a person up. It is very easy and therefore very important to listen to the customer. I can't tell you how many times a customer has pointed something out to me and I always take the time to review the receipt just to make real sure that a mistake has not happened. This works both ways as sometimes the customer has been wrong in giving me too much money and I will be the one to notice the mistake. I've had customers give me a 50.00 and think they only gave me 20.00 and then argue with me. Anyway, you should note who the cashier is and her name if possible and the time of the transaction, keep your receipt. You should go to the owner or the manager with this. I have had many people come into the store and complain to me about something another cashier has done and it is does little good. It is best if they go to the manager. For me to be put in the position of passing on complaints to my boss just puts me in a bad spot with my co-workers and it is 3rd party info...I wasn't there to see it or hear it so I just direct them as to where to take their complaints. Most don't bother so nothing much gets done.

That's true but with prices constantly changing and new sales, it can be hard to remember it all. If she had a scanner then it seems as if she was not paying attention to how she was ringing things up?? More than anything, it sounds as if she was just plain being rude and that is never ok.

Hi, sid556! I think the mistake she made is a bit different from what you described. It isn't only about carelessness this time. It reflected that she wasn't familiar with the goods in the supermarket at all.

While doing a work, project,or a job a person should have his complete concentration on it.Otherwise it happens like that particularly when you are engaged in cash handling you need to be more careful. Its just an eye opener for carelessness. *Smart people learn from others mistakes* Smiles

hi this reminds me of a careless cashier that gave me back twenty dollars too many. I had been very careful in tallying up my grocery purchases so I knew out of the money I gave her that I would just get five dollars back but she handed me twenty dollars. I said,"maan you gave me back too much . I gave you just five dollars more thant the amount of my groceries. She looked at me and glared," I do not ever make an error maam" I repeated,"oh but you did" behind me the line was getting longer. the man standing nect to me, snapped"Lady just t ake the money, okay."So I just walked out with twenty dollars. later on that week I came back to Vons. I noticed the lady who made the error was not on duty. I asked someone about her, and she said" Oh shirley got a pink slip as she has made too many errors and gives back too much money" I laughed and said, well gee her customers must have been happy. I did not give back the twenty simply because she had been so rude about it. k

Hi, Hatley! It seems that careless persons spread all over the world and all of them seem to be rude and never admit their mistakes... But we get profit, so don't mind!

Well it was your lucky day, so enjoy it!! As for this girl, she might not be there next time you go to the supermarket. They will surely find out that she's making too many mistakes. She'll probably have it deducted from her paycheck!!!!

Hi, MagicalBubbles! Maybe it's good for her to be unemployed from the supermarket, she isn't good at it. I pray that she could find a suitable job soon.

I have to say as long as customers do not complain than the owner will not be aware of her carelessness so she will be there for a long time. But one day a person will speak up and well either the owner will wonder if it was the first time and or if they have lost quite a bit.

Hi, hardworkinggurl! Yes, for sure I won't complain about the lower price. But I think the supermarket's account will tell her boss.
