AVG WHACKED my PC--sorry for absence, everyone!!

Well, as soon as I updated my AVG about 10 days ago my PC started to groan and whine and finally 4 days ago (Tuesday) it just shut off. I got it going enough to email my editor to tell him I'd be offline awhile and shortly after that it died again and I could not get it going. My computer tech company told me they had a LOT of people bringing PCs in recently and they all had the same problem--the AVG upgrade wreaked HAVOC!! So if your pc tells you that you need to upgrade AVG, just download the upgrade and delete the old AVG before downloading it. It'll save you time, money and aggravation!!! I'll catch up with my responding in about a week or so, my friends. Be patient, please!

I only used the free AVG since last June when I bought a new computer. It has been good so far. I am using the version 9. But these last two weeks, it keep bothering me with its new version 2011. I downloaded it, and I could not install it because I have XP 64 bit and it was a 32 bit version. And I cannot find the 64 bit version on the site. However, if you do have a fan problem, it has nothing to do with AVG, and your computer will turn itself off to protect itself from overheating and cooking itself. Which is a very good thing. lol

Yes, the upgrade. AVG said it had an upgrade so I let it do its thing and the next thing I know my computer is making strange noises (coincidentally, my fan was beginning to fail!) and nothing was working properly. Then it just turned itself off and kept doing that whenever I tried working. My tech says AVG is good protection but this one upgrade is causing a LOT of problems. I'm going to email them today and give them a piece of my mind and tell them how much their stupid upgrade cost me!

The fan wasn't the main problem and that surprised me because it's TEN years old!! My now-ex husband and my son build this computer and other than occasional reloading it's run perfectly for all these years. They suggested I replace the fan and knowing how old it was, I figured an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and all that!

LOL! Mac users are unfailingly enthusiastic in their praise! I have heard that Macs don't get viruses, is that true? I'll eventually have to get a new computer but I hope to wait at least a year. Mac seems like an alien world to me and I'm not sure I would like it. I wish there was some kind of computer rental place where I could try one out!

Hi dragon. Ya, when it came time to replace my laptop, I made the jump to a Mac on the advice of my son who is a computer expert. I love it. They are more expensive to buy but they run a lot faster, boot and shut down faster, run a lot more efficiently using less resources and you don't really need to run anti-virus software. I'll keep a PC desktop for backup but my main computer is my laptop and I'm totally sold on the Macbook Pro. It just does everything so much easier. It's much more intuitive. I also have it set up so I can run Windows 7 on it as a virtual machine if I have to. It's well worth the added cost in my opinion.

That's interesting cause I was unable to go to certain website, as in my army sites. And so I thought it might have been from me installing AVG, so I went ahead and uninstalled it. I still haven't been able to go to those sites but I figured I need to give it some time. So you still got AVG though? I just want to make sure it is still good. But then again maybe it's just bad for my computer or something. I don't know but then I gotta find another good free spyware and virus protection software. Well I hope my computer gets back to normal soon. And I hope everything works out for you.

Sorry you can't get to your sites! I do still have AVG but will change the way I update it to how the tech told me to. You have to have antivirus, have you tried Avast? That's a pretty good one. Panda Cloud is another good free one and ZoneAlarm firewall is free and has saved my computer many times. I hope your PC gets better!

Well they are working now. I don't have AVG anymore but I did go ahead and download Avast. I use to have it on my old laptop, but someone told me about AVG I guess it just didn't work for me for whatever reason it doesn't matter so long as I have something to cover my laptop. And thanks for the info on ZoneAlarm I downloaded that one as well. Nothing seems to be wrong currently which I great. Thanks once again.

I guess I am thankful I don't have AVG but I have Avast! instead. I hope you can get back to your usual routine of things you do online and I hope it didn't cost you too much to find out what the problem was.

It cost me $90! But I knew I would have to reload soon, it's been 18 months since I last did that and with all I do on the internet that's a long time. I'm still downloading stuff to replace what I lost--games and security software mostly, but I'll get everything back eventually. I know several people with Avast! and they really like it. My tech thinks AVG is the best so I'll stick with it for awhile. Good to see you!

Hiya dragon, This week all this week this Computer has been going so slow I almost felt like giving up. I have not had problems like you have had. Well to tell a fib I had one or two the other Day. A Day when it seemed to rain Viruses from everywhere. But I got rid of them all the whole lot but it took me ages to do so. Joys of the internet they do happen donĀ“t they. Glad to see you back.

Oh, joys--right! I spent at least two hours after I hooked up the PC re-downloading virus, malware and adware preventers/fixers. I find it very ironic that my freakin' anti-virus program was what took me down!!

Hiya dragon, Day before yesterday I spent the whole Morning well a part of it zapping nasty viruses that come in through the e-mail. I put a warning to my pals on Facebook about it. I would hate to think any of them would have opened those pesky things and crash their systems too. Panda used to crash our System all the time.

I've never heard of nod32 but I'll look it up. I'm always game to try new stuff! And I like to have backups just in case...one time a virus hit my PC and my antivirus couldn't deal with it nor could I download security software, that was a really nasty one. I like to have something all downloaded and waiting to activate just in case that happens again!
