Where is the magic of Brasil?

I always had an image of Brasil as something exotic and magical. I start to consider more and more idea of going there. But where shall I head. I am interested in something authentic, unique and unknown. The standard touristic places are not for me. Could anyone share their experience or knowledge of what I am looking for? ;)

I live in Brazil. There are many places where you can visit even in the tourist cities where you don't have to fall in the tourist trap. Most people who want to get away from the tourist traps head for the north east, or head to southern Brazil for a taste of Europe in Latin America.
