Is it easier for you to learn with or without deadlines?

For me, deadlines discourage me from digging into and enjoying a subject. If I want to study something, I want to be free to read the textbook and have confidence that I understand the material as completely as I possibly can. When a time limit is placed upon this, then the very opportunity cost of time to study and learn the material is in opposition to the required opportunity cost of time to complete assignments.

I don't like to associate deadlines with learning. Learning is an educational process. A deadline is pushing you against time. It takes a lot away from the learning you gain when you are racing against the clock.

True. Deadlines make one giddy. The thought of having to finish something at a very specific date oftentimes make one lose focus of what she is reading. But without deadlines though, finishing the task earlier is hard to happen. Deadlines serve as a discipline for us to learn to observe time and finish our work on time.

Personally, I can work just as effectively with deadlines as I can without them, and still enjoy what I am reading and learning. It's just a matter of time organization.

As we all might have experienced as students, I think what motivates people the most at all times is time constraint. Frankly speaking I've been in lots of horrendous. startling situations especially before exams, which I found worked for me very well in terms of grasping what I was reading... the pressure, the atmosphere, everything was so pushing that I had to make sure that I understand every piece of information that I've read..
However there is a big BUT there, reading/studying or whatever that you're doing, if done in a very short period of time won't last long...which brings me to the advantage of learning without deadlines, that you actually DO need very ample of time to dig in the things that you're trying to understand, in order to comprehend it thoroughly... the catch is simple; you just gotta be consistent, which unfortunately something that I hardly am :P

Hello, funkykid.
From my prospective, I believe that deadlines are very needed to succeed in a study process. Just imagine a situation: you're taking the TOEFL test in several months. But you're not very confident about your English.
First of all, why the deadlines are necessary, cos they can help us to organise ourselves. You're already aware, that you're meeting a challenge at the exact time. And a challenge is to be prepared so well to do your best on the test. So you should plan your actions so as to be ready for the test at the Final day =) By this plan you'd break up that huge preparation material so as to digest it in a normal way. Make your every single day, according to the Plan. When I had to take that intimidating test, I was very upset and confused how to start. When I started planning all my days. Eventually, I realised that it had work out))) I was very happy and proud of me)))
On the other hand, an absense of deadlines causes you to not be serious and this may lead to laziness. Knowing myself quite good, I'm sure if I have no a special date to prepare something, I won't accomplish that task at all. Ha, I'd rather prefer to watch TV or go out with my boyfriend than to devote that time for study.
For those reasons, for me deadlines are very important to do my job well.

Deadlines do put some structure on what I am doing. After all, if I don't have a time limit, I do tend to put things off. If there is a deadline of some sort, I tend to get to what is important first. At least that is the way I do it. Otherwise, I am going to keep putting it off and putting it off, past the point of what is completely and absurd.
So yeah, deadlines are something that really does help me keep on task. However, too strict and it could put a lot of pressure indeed. So there needs to be a happy medium. Strict enough not to lead to procrastination. However, flexible enough to give me some room to breath. That is the best thing I think, where I have enough time to plan for something going wrong but not too much time to mess around.

hi funky kid. I know what you mean when it comes to deadlines.
But I think there's also in a human's personality that if there's no deadline, it will remain as it is. Who would want to do something if there's no deadline in it? Plus it setting deadlines, is also like setting goals. If you want to finish on something you set a deadline or a goal. For instance, if i have tons of books, and would want to read them all, I would want to set a deadline on everybook so i could finish them all at a certain time. Setting deadlines makes you rush things but this will also help you when you reach the real world. in corporate world, there are things you dont know but you have to learn it fast for you have a deadline to meet.

it is easier for me to learn when i have deadlines :)) why?? because when i am in pressure i can do things beyond my limit :) i don't know why i am like this..but whenever i have a deadline i can do things better :)) while when i don't have a deadline i think i don't have a goal to hit that's why my work is not that good and it takes too long to finish :))

hi,
For me planned learning is more effective. I do not consider them as deadline but I make a daily plan of chapters and subjects. So i do not have any deadlines. when I am going as per my suggested plan there is fun and it encourages me to go ahead.
I have been post graduated and now doing my diploma in software marketing through distance education.
Looking forward for more opinions
