This may be possible and most of the people don't know about it. You have personally saw such cases, so it is true; and there is no doubt about it. Skin problem may happen to anyone and people should take precautions before it occurred to us. Skin problem may occur from few things. Fist of all it may be occurred from any metal, plastic, and impure water. Laptops has plastic and also it exposed to heat whenever we turn on. The heat is not so high but in mean time the plastic evaporates a gas which effects our skins. Remember, all good looking things are not always healthy.

Burning yourself is not a good thing, I'd suggest buying a laptop pad that you can set under your laptop so the heat doesn't burn your skin.

Maybe those laptops just have a high temperature while it's in use and those laptops are really uncomfortable when placed on top of your thighs. If those kinds of laptops were constantly used on top of the thighs, you may actually develop a skin irritation or something else. But I think nowadays, most laptops are being manufactured considering its operation temperature too which makes most laptops now to limit their operation temperature just like the laptop that I bought which only has an operating temperature of less than 95F which is tolerable enough when placed on top of my thighs. -)

I used to work for Dell before and yes we usually advice our customers not to operate laptops on the lap I know it sounds crazy being a laptop itself and not to operate it on the lap that's also one thing why they changed the term into Notebooks. Operating on top of your lap not only harms your Lap but harms your Computer as well It creates more heat in the Notebook causing it to overheat and shutdown on long periods of usage. My Advice is just place the notebook on a table.
