The perfect first cut

Soon to be House Speaker Boehner is looking at cutting legislative salaries. Nothing has been decided but atleast it is on the table. Pay attention. If it goes to a vote, watch who votes for it. Remember that in two years.... http://thehill.com/homenews/house/127879-boehner-pressed-to-cut-pay-of-lawmakers In my opinion, this is the perfect way to start 2011. This will show that they are ready and willing to make legitimate cuts. Do you think it will go? Do you think this is a good idea? Will that change the way you think of Congress?

Might as well take care of this early in the game because I suspect it will go nowhere. But, not to worry...those knights in shining armor who vote against it will have plenty of time to accomplish things that will impress their constituents enough to cause them to forget about that pesky pay cut legislation by the time the next election rolls around. This is politics as usual.

alright thank you! Thats the spirit! Why bother with hope and expectations. So we just shouldnt bother contacting our representatives and demanding this take action? After this election, even the GOP knows they are on thin ice. The American people are starting to pay attention.

Ok Spall, I can agree with you on that, what they say and what they do are completely different. Do you think more citizens are paying attention now and will hold their reps to a standard? Or do you think Americans will get lazy and find something else to think about?

Laglen, of course you should contact your elected representatives and express your opinions...I do that all the time...have for years...and that is not what I said. What I did say is that this opinion that so many hold right now that "the people" have the politicians in Washington walking on thin ice...that they are going to do exactly what *you* want done because they're afraid of *you*...is wrong. These are politicians and although many believe that this election was something new and unique, it's wasn't. The winds have shifted many times and will continue to shift. You are not going to agree with every single vote or piece of legislation the people you helped to put into office are involved in...they are not at your beck & call...but they will make sure that they do enough to make you happy...even if most of it is just for show. That's the reality of politics in this country.

No, it won't change the way I think of Congress because I think everyone knows Boehner and many others in Congress are independently wealthy so it would just be strictly a political ploy. Also, how much of a cut is he talking about here? I'm going to play the "devil's advocate" here a bit: while we all can agree nobody should get rich by being a member of the U.S. House or Senate, I sure don't expect them to do it for nothing. Let's face it, the relatively tiny amount of money it would save wouldn't be worth guaranteeing we'd only have wealthy politicians. We're supposed to want "ordinary people" to run for office, right? People like ourselves? Well, I know people like ME sure can't afford to just take off from their regular jobs and work for little or no pay and still be able to take care of their families. I really don't mind those who do a good job getting a decent salary for it and I don't think how they vote on a pay cut, depending on how big it is, of course, is a fair way to judge them. The millionaires will vote for it and attack the ones without a lot of their own money who don't simply because they can't afford to. I have a feeling this will turn out to be nothing more than a gimmick. I DO think they should lose some of their expensive perks and expense accounts; now THAT'S a whole different story! Annie

It was pointed out that this would be a good time to cut since their are so many new people coming. Therefore wouldnt be as painfull. I agree 100% to attack the perks.

Michael Steel, a spokesman for Boehner, said that no decision has been made to slash members' salaries, but pointed to the promises the GOP made in its "Pledge to America" in September. Ugh, I hope this wasn't merely "pretty words to make the people happy." If Boehner takes the initiative to do this, then props to him. Do try to look at what exactly it is he's trying to pass though. I'm sure I don't have to tell anyone that they could always include "extra tidbits" that may not be directly related to cutting salaries. Please, do post another topic when this happens though. While I hope to remember this, I'm aware I can be forgetful...

I agree, time will tell and that is a good point to see what else goes in there. I would REALLY like to see them not allow extra crap being tacked to bills.

Perfect! I will be watching this like a hawk. The first thing I will watch for is who votes for and against a vote on it. Then, I will watch to see who votes yes or no on it. This should all prove to be a really good acid test for the new crop of legislators. I have long held the belief that the U.S. legislature should follow the same standard as my state legislature follows, as a volunteer job. My state reps make a little over 200 dollars a year (plus mileage and free toll passage).

x - I agree and I also believe that we want NO career politicians. After their first term they seem to forget who they work for. I think there are enough Americans to fill these seats.

I had a boss tell me once there was a long line of people outside that door to replace me. Maybe it will go somewhere, maybe it won't. I am going to remain skeptical until they prove otherwise. At worst, my expectations will be met. At best, I may be pleasantly surprised (until they pull their first inevitable stupid move).

I will believe it when I see it. The other thing that you have to look at is the bill itself. In a bill like this you will find many poison pills, and they will plant items in there so it looks like they are cutting their salaries, but really are making more money. I do think it is good, but these are politicians, and they lie all the time. Cutting their own salaries is nothing in comparison to all of the other money they control. I think if you get enough angry people to back it then it will, but again, you have read the bill and see what else is in there. It would only change the way I think of them if it is a clean bill, and I will bet anyone on here that it won't.

Epicure, what is the difference between appointing "Czars" and waiting till Congress leaves and pushing through all of your appointees that couldn't get confirmed like what Bush did?

How about all the Czars recklessly and needlessly "appointed" by the usurper? You are right, debater, there are many "poison plants" meant to deceive the naive and gullible.

It looks like Boehner has gotten a little wake up call after his "stop Medicare cuts" line was met with such disdain. This would be a start. Now, if we can end all the lifetime benefit packages and cut Congressional staff to 2-3, maybe we could keep them so busy they would stop spending all OUR money.

I know, I know. I've always been a "rip the bandaid off" kind of guy. I really think that is the best approach with spending cuts. Let everyone face the pain quickly, then they will adjust. A slow, incremental approach prolongs the pain and tends to lead to reversal when things get a little sticky.

I think it's a great idea but, honestly, no one will remember how the Congress voted on it when it comes time for reelection.

OK but, you have to be here in 2 years to remind everyone how the vote turned out since Americans have such a short term memory issue.

Great idea; good for Boehner. I hope there's follow-through. Remember so many in the Senate are already millionaires and 7 out of 10 of them are democrats! Once they dispose of the usurper by consigning him to prison, then it will really be "a go" and then, when they clean up their own act(s), I will begin to think differently.

You posted in another thread that I made that you could not say one nice thing about Obama. Obama's first day, he initated salary cuts to all whitehouse officials earning over $100,000. Boehner being pressed by taxpayer groups to look at cutting salaries elicited a "Good for Boehner" out of you, but when Obama did it on his own, you can't say one nice thing about him?

No, I can't. I don't believe anything he says. Never will. You see, usurpers who arrogantly demean and bankrupt our country because they know many Americans simply do not know their own Constitution and can be defrauded thus, make me sick. I'm not a fan of lies, deception, treason, takiyya, government by stealth, jihad or any other evil. Bankrupting and ruining a country isn't "nice". Pretending to be "president" isn't "nice".
