Fireworks! I would ban them, what is your opinion?

We have just celebrated 'Bonfire Night', 'Guy Fawkes Night','The 5th of November', 'Firework Night' here in the UK when traditionally bonfires are lit and fireworks let off. To be honest I HATE fireworks - always have, when I was a child I would receive a present instead of fireworks as I disliked them so much. I have thought for years that the practise of them being sold to the general public should be banned and that the only fireworks should be the safe public displays. Although Bonfire Night is on the 5th November from early October you hear fireworks being let off and you can guarantee they'll be going again tonight two days after the event. These fireworks disturb and distress many animals and many old people living alone. Last night my daughter went out with her 6 year old daughter and some PRATT threw a lit firework at them from a passing van! Thankfully they weren't hurt - but they could well have been. Every year we hear of incidents like this or of people putting the fireworks through people's letterboxes, we hear of badly burnt youngsters and all because of fireworks - I wouldn't mind but Guy Fawkes never even succeeded in blowing up Parliament!!!!! I really do think that the time has come to keep fireworks for public and organised displays and keep them out of the hands of idiots! What is your opinion?

We should just hold people responsible for how they use fireworks and not violate their rights to use them.

I wanted fireworks to be banned too. Since its an explosive and could easily be harmful for those who will handle it not carefully. I know I shouldn't say this but some people are fools enough to light it not using sticks or candles and use matches making them blow their hands off when the fireworks are lighted. Every single year hundreds of young and old lose their fingers, hands or even limbs because of fireworks. Yes I agree with you that there are so many IDIOTS around playing with this very dangerous thing. In our country they already tried to ban the fireworks every holidays but some can still buy illegal fireworks that are only supposed to be used and lighted by fireworks technicians. I don't go out on holidays because I'm afraid to get hit by fireworks. I had an experience already that a fountain kind of fireworks instead of spewing light sparks just exploded... Manufacturer defect.. Hope it will really be banned soon...

There seem to be different rules in different countries regarding the use of fireworks. It must have been frightening for you when the firework exploded!

I would not think that you have the same problem in China with youths and the like causing problems with fireworks, I know that they are a big part of Chinese culture and life.

I actually couldnt agree more. This past fourth of july, we were sitting on my friends front porch, where we could see 3 separate professional displays, when the idiot neigbors, not knowing what mortars were, lit one and threw it in the street. An almost professional grade fire work, meant to be shot up into the air, being lit on the ground is probably the most dangerous thing I have ever seen. Luckily there were just a few minor cinder burns.

It is very frightening that these dangerous weapons (as basically that is what they are) can be got hold of by anybody!

Yes, I would too! They are loud and very unpleasant and on top of that they are dangerous and people (especially children) can get hurt! They are just a waste of money, I think!
@oldchem1 (8132)

They are VERY expensive and last only minutes - even seconds -it is like setting fire to money!!

I have to say that I agree with you because of there being so many accidents with people who are drinking and basically playing with fire. Stupid meets stupid. If they were banned except for the professionals, I think accidents would go down significantly however, I doubt that'll happen any time soon. At least not in our lifetime anyway.

No I don't think it will, I can remember people advoicating it when I was younger - and THAT was a LONG time ago!!

HI,I'm Frank..I am from China,where the fireworks is so popular..I admit that I hate the fireworks..I don't know why so many people like it...As the fireworks can pollute the air,and it's very dangerous to play with it..and so much noises..In China here,,almost everyweek,especially on the weekend,there are alwasys someone who get married..and at that day,,the fireworks works...Besides the pollution,danger,noises,,I don't think CHina is such a rich country that allow it to spend so much money on the firework....so completely agree with the banning thing..

Isn’t it a shame that there are such idiots out there in the world? I am so relieved to hear that your daughter and granddaughter are okay. I love watching firework displays and I agree that it is where they should be limited to because thanks to a bunch of fools the rest of us should be penalised. Still I do think fireworks should only be allowed in the hands of experts.

It certainly seems the sensible thing to me, fireworks can be very dangerous and I think need to be more closely supervised.

Hi Chem! You would HATE living in my state. In Tennessee you can buy fireworks 365 days of the year. On the fourth of July there are fireworks going off everywhere. Actually I stand corrected...usually a week BEFORE the 4th of July you can hear fireworks going off! I am not really a big fan of fireworks either. I like to see them at a display...like the great big ones, but I can't stand the really loud ones. At our house all the kids...including my 40 something year old child (yes, the hubby) love fireworks! They spend a fortune on them and I usually end up getting aggravated at the amount of fireworks they come home with! They know I only like the great big fireworks, so what did they do this past year, but spend a ton of money on the great big ones and they took me out to a big field to shot them off. I have to admit, I did like those, but not the amount of money they spent!

I am not sure what that equals in U.S. Dollars, however not last year, but the year before my husband and kids spent close to $200.00 on fireworks. I was so mad! What makes that even worse, is my oldest son spent close to the same amount on fireworks as well. I said to my crazy family "you just spent close to $400.00 on something that will be over in a matter of minutes"....to me that is absolutely insane!!!

Hiya chem, It would be a bit of a hard Job to ban them here. Like stine says they are used continually throughout the Year. Many lives have been lost here in Firework Factories. Yet they still let small children handle them as if they were toys just amazing really. When Spain was playing the Matches against England and right through to the last Match I was having fireworks land right outside my Kitchen Door. True I was inside but that did not take away the huge bangs they make when they hit the floor. That was a very nasty thing for them to do they are only very small Children and can scare so very easily too what a nasty load of you know whats. I think that the Rules have to be much stricter than what they are at the moment.

I like fireworks how they look and how they sound. I have gotten injured before. Several of my friends were having a roman candle fight where they were pointing them at each other out in the desert. I wasn't in this but one of them hit me and burned off some of my hair and scalp. It hurt, but it wasn't that bad, maybe a second degree burn. I don't care. They still have fun with it.

And you still like them????
7 Nov 10
I like bonfire night myself and so do my family, but i do wish idiots that set them off should be stopped.... but unless they set them off on the street... it would be hard to stop them completely. I am glad they didn't get banned like they were saying years ago, but like you said the idiots that set them off give sensible displays a bad name.

I thought for years now that fireworks were illegal for the public to use and that you couldn't buy them without a special license. But I see them in certain kinds of stores now and the public is allowed to buy them again. I don't know what happened to that law. I love fireworks...when done by professionals. I used to clean a house, I'm own a cleaning company, that the owners owned a company that did firework displays and they made their own fireworks. They were a big company and they didn't sell to the public. They do the firework displays every night at the Calgary Stampede which is a big event that lasts 10 days, every year. We also have every year, lasts a week long, Fireworks contests from different countries from all over the world. It draws hundreds of thousands of spectators from all over the world. It is another really big event we host every year. I make sure I go at least one night out of the 7 night affair. Every night they have three different countries set off their displays and there are judges that rate them and the last night the 3 top countries do another display and then the judges pick the top one and they win some kind of trophy and they win a big purse of money. Last years display was won by China. They are almost always in the top three but usually don't win it so this year they broke Canada's long running record of winning it the last 7 years. I love fireworks but I agree that only the professionals should be allowed to use them and they should not be sold to the public. I don't know the statistics but I am sure that a lot of people get hurt from using them every year, and especially should not be allowed to be used by children. Cheers and Happy mylotting my friend Chris

I wouldn't say to ban the sales of fireworks. However, I think the public should not have access to it. The display of fireworks should only be allowed by trained people, not anyone who might get their hands on it.

That's what I am advocating, a ban on fireworks on sale to the general public
@Memnon (2170)

I've thought for a long time that fireworks should not be for sale in the public domain. There have been too many accidents, and the victims are usually the innocents rather than the idiots.

Very true, the casualty departments must hate November!!
8 Nov 10
in a way i agree, there are too many incidents every year and some people don't care who they sell them to. It would be better to have and organised few around that you could go to, that way you could save a fortune, not have to do all the work and stay safe as it will be done by people who know what they are doing. They are nice to look at but damn noisey.

Personally I love fireworks the darkness of the light then all of a sudden FLASH and BOOM and its a really cool moment. But from what i hear you live in the UK and I live in the US in minesota and the only time you can have then is 2 weeks before the fourth of july and 1 day after and thats it and you can get a fine if you dont have a profesional lisence to shoot them off in big displays. And about the kids burning themselfs and those things in the US you have to be 18 to legally buy fireworks but the problem is parents buy them for their kids and the kids burn themselfs and things like that it says right on the box to use with supervision. and i feel so sorry for your daughter and I hope you can find the people who did that. But over all i dont thing fireworks should be banned I think they are a good fun thing to be used a celebrations but when people use them the wrong way people to get hurt and there is consiquences

That is why I would like to see them just for special displays -0 people could still have the pleasure of them but in a safe environment
