When did being an anti-colonialist turn into a bad thing

If someone wrote liberal secular marxist progressive socialist maoist anti-colonialist keynesian economy loving democrats you would think that this is a derogatory comment especially in the context that it was meant to be derogatory. My question is about the phrase anti-colonialist. Exactly how is that a bad thing? Also is there really anyone who is the opposite of anti-colonist pro-colonist today? Oh well yeah there are those that would like to colonize scape but I don't think that is what we are discussing.

I'd gladly be described as a "liberal, secular, [marxist], progressive, [socialist], anti-colonialist keynesian economy loving democrat". The only one I'd take strong issue with is being called a Maoist. PS. Who, what or where is Scape?

"liberal secular marxist progressive socialist maoist anti-colonialist keynesian economy loving democrats" Wow...that is a mouthful. If it was meant derogatory than take it derogatory. My question would be who would people want to "colonize" in this day and age? The time for colonization is over.

At a slight stretch you could consider the Bush doctrine of actively spreading "freedom and democracy" around the world (as opposed to the Bush doctrine of preemptive strike) to be a form of colonialism.

Very true.

Spreading freedom and democracy around the world as a form of colonialism is an interesting concept. Still it is applicable for me to call myself an anti-colonialist.

I guess I am kind of anti-colonialist, as I believe pretty much all of the land is claimed.... I do believe in the US minding its own business, and only striking when threatened. In the spirit of educating myself here, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-imperialism I find the insults thrown around are pointless and does not help your case. But sometimes can be fun

I realize (or at least think) there is a deeper purpose to this discussion so i won't waste typing on why being an anti colonialist is a bad thing. I think it is pretty much a for gone conclusion. There is how ever opportunity here to cover a couple different topics. I'll dispense with the easier one first. "Anti-colonialist" when used to refer to Obama, is a reference to his grandfather, who was killed in prison as an anti colonial activist in colonial Kenya. It is thought by some that this may have shaped some of Obama's views towards Great Briton. But it is just speculation on that particular point (albeit reasonable speculation) and requires a whole other thread. The second issue and more relevant, is the use of terms when describing political opponents. This is common on both sides and in many cases is equally inaccurate on both sides. Obama is no more a "communist" than Rand Paul is a "right wing extremist". The use of such terms is a simple way of instilling fear and painting blanket images for a group we disagree with. The use of such terms, however useful they may be in solidifying the supporters of your cause, is utterly counter productive when trying to sell you case to the opposite side. The moment the word or phrase comes out of one's mouth, the listener will likely hear nothing else afterwords, no matter how valid the point it is trying to make is.

Even if that is true about Obama I still don't see what is wrong about being an anti-colonialist. My point of this discussion was to actually to discuss colonialism vs anti-colonialism.

It is true. Nor do i see anything wrong with being an anti-colonialist. And I'm sorry, I guess I took the thread much less literally than you meant it to be.

it was interesting. i never knew that about obama, mainly because i don't go looking into the family history of most politicians (it is usually really dull. mr polly was born into a well off family. his father was an important figure in blah. his grandfather held blah office. his great grandfather was a carrot. the women in his family didn't make an impression on the world, but they dressed nicely. etc )

if that quote comes from who i think it does, and it does, then you know this is a person who just strings together often contradictory, and sometimes completely random, adjectives and rarely knows what any of them mean? next time i expect the phrase to be liberal, secular, socialist, muslim, communist, coal-fired, semi-detached, wholewheat, strawberry democrats.

Oh I am sure everyone know who I am talking about. I am surprised that he hasn't mixed in a Sharia Law sympathizing secularist to his list yet.
