If something always had to have existed, why God, instead of the universe itself? Why bring God into it? If something arose out of nothing, why not the universe?

As always, the real answers run much deeper. We base all our judgement on the physical laws of this universe. Quantum physics is showing much more out there. Consider a universe or dimension without time. It would have no beginning or end. It would just be.Since we are spiritual beings in our true natures, we are part of this eternal existence. This universe exists for only one reason. Cause and effect aid in learning. When we are free to choose, the consequences bring wisdom to us all. Science always opens doors to even more complex things. Answers do as well.

Everyone thinks God came from nothing. As humans we just do not want to accept that God is a creator and created life, the universe and more. We think he had to have a beginning. First of all God is not one person or being. God is a family. There is more than one and no they are not just a trinity or three rolled into one. Families grow, expand and add to. Just because we do not know where God came from does not mean he came from nothing. None of us came from nothing but there was a time we did not exist at least in the physical world as we know it. It is not for us to know right now. Anymore than it is right for us to know what special surprise or gift a parent has or is preparing for our birthday surprise. Why is it people demand God tell them every thing right now. He like any one is entitled to keep a few suprises back for later. One being where God came from and how God was started. It is not for us to know right now. In time we will when it is the God family time to tell us.

This wasn't really my question. I asked, Why bring God into it at all? If we're talking about a mystery that can't be solved, why not leave it at the universe? Your descriptions of God are pure speculation.
