Which type of camera do you prefer, DSLR or mini compact cameras?

I often thought of buying a new camera. My current camera lags when taking snaps and it doesn't have an image stabilizer. My question is, which do you prefer, DSLR or just a mini compact cameras that can produce good quality images without complex adjustment like an DSLR? I like to have a DSLR for its functions and photos it produces but i think it would be troublesome to take around when you go out as it is often too bulky and you wouldn't want to leave it in the car as it might get stolen. Do let me know your preference and maybe you might help me decide which one to go for. Thanks

Thanks for sharing with us your experience in various types of cameras. Technology is surely picking up. Anyway, there are still professional photographers that prefer to use the films as it is deem as most original and difficult to modify. :D

Most of the time, I prefer a DSLR. Actually, I bought a new one yesterday :-) I like having all the options, being able to change lenses, adjust exposure etc. IMO, you'd usually get much better photos with a proper DSLR (if you know how to use it :-) ) I have a small digital compact, a Canon Ixus that I use every now and then if I want to take a camera but don't have room for the DSLR or don't intend to use the pictures for something serious. I've had my Ixus for ages (7 years maybe) so it's quite old-fashioned now, but I don't think I'll get a new one as I don't use it very often.

I do agree with you that DSLR is more "FUN" to use. Since there are so many functions to explore and different lens and settings for different events. If DSLR is cheap enough, i wouldn't think twice to get 1 right now. Anyway, i'm now still in the process of saving some money for one :D All the best and do enjoy your new gadget!

I definitely prefer DSLR camera, I have a Nikon DSLR and a Shoot camera and I find DSLR quality is better and pictures are nicer. Point and shoot cameras are useful too if you're going somewhere like a water park and don't want to bring an expensive camera. I prefer NIKON brand for a DSLR camera. I prefer CANON brand for a point and shoot camera.

I've been getting back into it again with my DSLR - but I want to track down a film SLR such as an Canon EOS A2E or Elan series. I have a Canon AE-1 Program laying around but manual focus sucks for anything that is moving...

Wow. you must be good at photography. Sometimes, film SLR does has its advantages as you can store the negative instead of storing just the digital image. I do see some competition that requires film as proof but currently DSLR is gaining much popularity as you can have plenty of shots without wasting any films :D Have a nice day!

May i know which particular brand of DSLR are you using and the types of lens you have? I think besides having the DSLR, lens and flash would also be important for DSLR right? Thanks.

Thanks for your opinion. I think Sony alpha do produce some decent photos as well... really hard to make a decision. Maybe must consider the price the lens too :D
